I just got my max yesterday but im curious about the stereo.
The problem is there is a Sony deck in there and it does not sound like the highest quality. It has factory speakers.
Is this because of the goofy setup nissan has ? Will I have to replace all speakers w/aftermarket to get better quality sound??

Thanks

our cars came with 2 versions of stere.. Bose, and non-bose..

the non-bose stuff is actually "cheap" Clarion components. you can interface this stuff with just about any other brand out there- just be sure to bypass the external amplifier for the rear channels. if it's already got a sony head in it, it's probably done already.

the bose stuff is horrible to try to interface with anything aftermarket. I suggest either staying 100% bose, or dumping the whole thing.

I think you've got the non-bose system, and the OEM speakers just suck, period.. you've got 4x6 up front and 6.5" in the back. you can go up to 6.5" in front, if you modify the plastic door pods behind the door panel itself.. (I built a stronger pod out of wood and fiberglass, but some people have just cut the OEM plastic pod to fit a 6.5")

I would highly recommend replacing the stock speakers, if indeed they're still stock.
for recommendations on brands, it all depends on your budget and listening styles. Pioner and Infinity both make some pretty good, moderately priced 4x6 and 6.5".. Rockford fostage also has lots of good stuff for around $100/set.

anything else, ask away!
Welcome to the forums.. Enjoy your stay!

In that case, You're probably better off to replace the bose speakers with aftermarket and run new wiring, bypassing all the bose amps and fun stuff like that.
Often times, the adaptors from the aftermarket head unit to go to the bose can kill the sound quality, but then again, the person who installed the Sony in your car may not have even used an adaptor. I would suggest pulling out the head unit and looking back there to see if they even installed one, before buying new speakers.. if they didn't install an adaptor, you can try installing one nad see if that helps the sound enough that you're happy with it. The adaptors usually cost around $60..

Mine came with the non-bose system and it had 6.5" cheap paper cone sony speakers all around. The amp was all screwed up and wires are cut everywhere. I would like to catch the person that had this car before me and beat the **** out of them. They must have had a really nice system in it and rims and stuff like that, but they freakin cut everything !
