Tranmission or ????

Tranmission or ????
My 91 max has been having some serious issues accelerating as of late. I get into what seems to be in 2nd or 3rd gear at around 35 mph. Once I hit that point the engine revs up hitting 6,000 RPMs. To change gear I can let down on the gas pedal for a quick second then it shifts. Shortly after it shifts back and does the same thing. What should I do? Thanks for the feedback

It's a pretty good probability that your transmission is shot, though. Get it checked by a professional immediately. Good luck, buddy. The sooner you get it checked the cheaper it's going to be on you. Don't drive it unless you have to, I really stress that.

Actually it sounds like you have a bad solenoid pack, it costs around 130$
Most people on the org dont know much about trannys so they just tell you to get a new one (rebuilt). The dealer will not fix your tranny, they have some policy where they will only install a rebuilt.
Dont forget to change your tranny fluid, doing a couple drain and fills.

From your description, it sounds like you are slipping in 2nd and overdrive. My 92 was doing the same thing recently, so I rebuilt the tranny myself and found the second/direct brake band with signs of overheating. Turns out the soleniod pack was bad, which didn't allow enough line pressure to develope. Look on your car and see if you have a black cylinder about the size of an old ignition coil mounted next to the air cleaner housing. If you do, and there is an electrical plug on the side of it, unplug the connector and drive the car. If the problem is better (it'll shift VERY firmly), then it most likely is the solenoid. It's fairly easy to change.

hey Geoff i found this 1989
Transmission
Nissan Maxima M.T- 1ST GEAR OUT,CORE ONLY MAX2 $125 Rt. 43 Auto Parts, Inc. USA-OH(Carrollton) Rt43Aut@aol.com 1-330-627-7700 . we could use the guts of my old tranny in it and get a bearing replacement for the busted input shaft bearing on my old one throw it in there and finally get your max running again. I e-mailed them about it and I am waiting for a reply. let me know what you think when you get back.

Thank you for the info. I was just going to post a very similar question about a problem that I had with my transmission tonight when I came across your response.
My 90 GXE auto trans started slipping tonight when I pulled out and it would not shift from secon to drive or overdrive. When I would put the shift selector in 1st to pull out and then shift , it would not slip but it still would not go above 2nd. I tried your suggestion and unplugged the solenoid and it shifted OK, but jerky. After a 5 minute test drive I plugged it back in and the trans works perfect.
Now the question is , do I have a bad solenoid or was it a bad connection??? Is the car safe to drive as is ?????
Once again, thank you for the advice.
