Question for ppl with manual tranmission...

My father had just gotten a 95 maxima and its a manual and he has a problem starting it. he would step on the cluth, turn the key and hold it for about 5-10 second than it'll start, is this normal? Cause in my 97 which is auto i would just the turn the key for a second and it start...

Could it be a faulty ignition switch? or is it normal on all manual tranmission... as you can see i never had a manual car before so i dont know anything about it... any suggestion would be great... thanks!

do you mean it sits there cranking for 5-10 seconds, or that it sits there, then after 5-10 seconds it starts cranking? if its the first one, i wouldnt be worried, maybe just tune it up, but if its the latter... i dont know what to tellyou, maybe something needs to be adjusted.

Neutral Safety swtich might be acting up...or even his ignition! For a 10 year old car you gotta sometimes either deal or repair those idiosyncracies...good luck what ever you do...

yea what they all said....

If you have an DVOM good, now get a haynes

Read the connectors from continuity with the ignition switch in different postions and make sure those connections have it.

If thats good, take out the NSS and put the DVOM leads from on terminal to the other, when you depress it it should go Beep, if not thats yours problem.

Or, the brushes in the starter are starting to wear and you get bad/intermitent starting.

In addition to turning the key, I also have to push up on the key to make contact in a certain way. Just turning it normally wont make contact with whatever's in the ignition. Wiggling the key around in my old 200sx (while turning to start) was the only way to get it to make contact too.
