tranmission service question

Hey guys,
I was wondering if they remove the pan and replace the gasket when doing the transmission service or do they just replace the tranny fluid by remove it from the drain plug. A freind of my father's who use to be a mechanic at nissan for 14 years told me that they replace the fluid by a drain plug located on the tranmission pan and that they dont remove the entire pan. He said the Pan on tha max is pretty big and doesnt get removed during tranny fluid service.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,
Ken

Thats what most places will typically do - especially for the ~$60 transmission drain and fill. The more expensive tranny services are the flushes - but even in those, they typically don't drop the pan... they just use a vacuum like machine to make sure they get all the old tranny fluid out.

I'm sure you can find a shop that is willing to drop the pan - but its not the "normal" procedure I guess.

it depends where you go, if you want to replace the filter then yea you need to take the pan off. its not that bad man ,iv dont it a couple of times. just make sure that the car has sat for some time so the fluid is cooled down.

Well i have always gotten the tranmission service done at Nissan and they have charged me $128 each time. What do they do? do they drop it and replace the filter or do they just drain and fill? If they do a drain and fill I can do that too...I will not pay $128 again but if they replace the filter then i will goto them...

thanks,
Ken

Check the invoice (see if they have any gaskets listed) - my guess is they are doing a flush (as opposed to a drain and fill). Or call them and ask...

That is a major rip for $128. For a flush I would do it. however, I just bought some tranny fluid for like $15 and drained and filled while I did my oil....even faster.
