i just hooked up an amp to some subs. i now notice that there is a high pitch buzz when i have the system turned on and driving. the buzz becomes more high pitch when i step on the gas. i bought the best cables that my stereo shop had, they are supposed to eliminate noise. what is causing the buzz?

sounds like altenator noise to me....what kind of cable did you get?

check to make sure you have tight grounds and all the connections are tight...

I'm having the same prob......

just got the amp in today and there is a faint whinig noise that I can hear when I accelerate with the radio on(thus the amp is on), what could it be with the alternator?? I thought alternatpr too, but the noise is coming form the back where the amp is installed??? is there a wrong hookup somewhere?? I used 8awg all the way back on the 60Wx2 amp, hmmmm.........but that thing sounds SWEEET AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!

I had that problem(and still do to an extent) but the whining on mine was very loud when my front speakers were wired 'out of phase' i guess u call it..i had the + and - the wrong way at the speakers. Fixed that and the whining had gone to almost inaudible. So far no changes in grounding have made any difference for my prob. Just my experience so far

If you did the hook ups yourself try checking that your power wire and ground wire on your amp are not overlapping or near or very close to each other.

Thats what Im thinking...

I dont think that the RCA cables should be next to the power cables. My system is doing the exact same thing. I Think that I need to rewire everything and re-ground the whole system, but I've gotten used to it by now. Also, get your battery tested to make sure it is giving enough charge to the rest of your car. I got mine replaced this saturday and it really helped. My old battery was only giving about 10 volts so my bass would cut out after leaving the system up for a while. My friends kinda like the noise anyway, they say it sounds cool like turbo =)

OK wiring 101

Run power down driver's side
Run RCA's down passenger side

both together will result in the whine..

the whine is bad...may sound like a turbo but results in lack of quality...i'd much rather hear a good quality system then have a whine in the background of the music...

i ran all my wires down the drivers side. i guess its worth trying to take it apart and run the RCA's down the passenger side.

problem solved

this is an old post, but since a few other people had the same problem i thought id tell what i did because it fixed it completly. first, i rewired the system with the power cable and system remote cable running down the drivers side and the RCA's running down the passengers side(btw, the RCAs i am using are the top Monster Cables). Next, i connected the ground on the RCA's(not all RCAs have a ground wire) to the ground from the head unit. Next, i got my ground from my amp, and cut that cable as short as possible(now only about 3 inches). Then i got the dremel tool out and sanded all the paint off the area the ground wire was connecting to. i hear absolutly no whining noise at all now. from what i was told, the main thing on getting rid of this alternator noise, is to have the amp ground cable as short as possible! hope this helps the rest of you that have the terrible buzz.

new amp and sub

hey guys
im happy as a pig in **** cause i just got my dads 89 maxima. i want to fix up the audio system though. (among fixing other things) the front and rear speakerss are good along witht the head unit (all pioneer). i was thinking of a 4 channel california pro amp for the 4 speakers and using the factory clarion amp to drive my new sub. i have never realy messed with stuff of this magnitude before on cars. I just learned, reading the previous threads, abaout running rca cables and power cables on different sides. what advice can you guys give me on messing with it. should i put my new amp in the trunk next to the existing amp or under the driver or passenger seat? is it really worth spending alot of money on monster cable? any warnings before i start?
thanks for the help

Since none of the resident audi pros took this..

I'll give it a go. first I wouldn't suggest using a the stock amp to drive anything, it basically sucks at powering anything aftermarket, let alone a sub! as for the 4 interior speakers what model are they and what is the RMS wattage? I wouldn't suggest throwing an amp in there and not knowing how much poer the speakers can handle. For example I have a 2 Kenwood 6.5"s(60w rms each) in my rear powered by a 2-channel Profile Calif. Jam (60w rms per channel) thus the balance of power is equal and BTW it sounds awesome, almost don't need to add a sub, but I'm going to anyways. As for a sub it all depends on the RMS it can handle and the RMS of the amp you use to power it. For example I'm getting a 10" MTX sub(400w rms) and powering it with another Cali Jam(450w rms). For better understanding, I'd order a Crutchfield catalog(www.crutchfield.com), its got plenty of audio info in it and its how I learned most of the audio info I posses. good luck!

Re: new amp and sub

hey thanks for givin me some tips
my front speakers are pioneer ts-a4612, of which the rms is 2-20 watts and the sensistivity is 90. my rears are pioneer ts-a1648's whcich can handle 2-35 rms and 120 peak. the face is the pioneer fhp404. the amp i want is teh profile california jam j600.4 which puts out 75x4 watts. so i guess that means iwould blow my speakers if i put that on?
i know about crutchfield and have ordered from them many times, but with home audio. this is my first venture into car audio.
most speakers in there catalog can only handle up to about 20 watts per channel rms. does this mean a sub is not a good idea?
also, i was looking at a jbl grand touring gt1041 10" sub to put in the trunk. is it a good idea to build a box or buy 1. i need to save money and i have a workrom where i can dato tracks into the wood and all that stuff so i was thinking about that. also, if i use an amp for the 4 speakers, would you be able to hear the sub without an amp?
thanks again in advance

Re: new amp and sub

one other question
the way an amp works is it takes your recievers rms wattage and adds that to your amps rms x 4 wattage and that total is the watttage that goes to your speakers
is this correct?

Well..........

you'll definently need new speakers, for the Cali Jam amp. how much are you looking to spend?? remeber if you want good sound you gotta spend good money( thats always the damn catch!!), now since you've got a 75x4 amp you've gotta look into some Infinity or Polks, etc. the more expensive brands at $80-100+ that have the rms to back it up. IMO the lowest rms you might wanna look at is 50-60(IMO, 50 ONLY if you wanna risk pushing it!) as for your sub situation, you can go for the GT series and find a 300w second amp to power that. I used to have my sub powered off my stock Clarion amp and to me it sounded like crap when I used to roll up on some guy with a nice system, but if you are on a budget like I was last summer than by all means power that sub off the stock amp, it will still give you some BOOM, but it in no way compares to powering it off an aftermarket amp!!!! as for the actual "technical specs" on how amps work I couldn't really tell you and one last suggestion if you really wanna know the best way to go with your system, look for MATT93GXE on the General, Audio and 3rd Gen boards he's in the ISCA audio competitons every year and knows a sh*tload of stuff about audio, he's your best bet on getting the real lowdown on building a great system!!!! hope I've helped you out some

OOHH man???

Yo, anyone that is installing a system should know that noise... Let me guess It's your first time. But thats all good, It 90% of the time happens when you have a Tape in, or if your cd is doing that you have to move the ground to a smaller lenght. What the noise is, is your engin freq. hitting the ground and giving you the funny buzzing noise.

First= Move the ground towards the back of the car but keep it short, or get a cd player.
If that don't work then e-mail me with exactly how you ran the wires.
