DaBox Update...Need Tranny Advice,

Nissan makes crappy transmissions, but they sure make one hell of a popcorn machine! Well, at least thats what mine sounds like whenever Im in gear. So, my TO bearing in my clutch sounds like the Wheel of Fortune, together with the tranny, I have a lovely duet of grinding and crunching.

I have been driving the car a lot less lately hoping to extend the life of the tranny until I have enough money for the fix. Im going in steps here...Im getting a stock clutch from Kaleb @ Courtesy first as it will be the least expensive part. Next, I have to decide which will be the best method of fixing this car. I am leaning towards buying a used tranny from a boneyard and putting that in. Mainly because I dont know what to expect with a rebuild.

93 VE manual VLSD trannies are not very popular as I have found, so the going rate is around $700 - $800. I found one that has 146K on it for $650 but I dont know if it has ever had any prior rebuilds. Another one has 94K for $700 with no prior rebuilds.

My question is, if I get a used tranny, is it still difficult to replace the bearings/synchros etc. before I put it on the car? Will this be less expensive and/or a more reliable way? I am just worried of having tranny problems again on a used tranny that already has higher mileage than my car.

I have 129K on mine now and I have had the rattles since 122K. Any advice on EVERYTHING I may need and replace? Let me know if I should do things differently.

I wish this car was as reliable as my 91. No tranny/clutch issues with 167k on it in june. Thank goodness everything else in this car now seems fine. Im keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks!
Clark

I'll assume you have a FSM to begin with. You'll need to buy the special tools listed also. Go here for more info http://www.motorvate.ca/

I doubt i will tackle the job. I have neither the skill, time, or resources to do that kind of a job. My Mechanic would do a replacement and install of everything for $300 labor.

Let us know what you find out. But I would personally think getting a used tranny could mean trouble. Then again it would depend on the damage of the car at the boneyard also. Definetly worth checking out, but I would be careful so you don't get burned on a bad tranny.

Good luck bro, let us know!
