90 GXE: Digital Dash issues...
I have a 90 GXE. The car came with a digital dash. When I bought the car, the dash did not work so I ended up buying another unit from one of .org members. Now it works great which brings me to the next question. I swapped the brains using the same cluster and it appears that the Brain/control unit for my dash is broken. I used both LCD displays with that brain and neither one worked and they both work with the good brain. I found one of the posts that it is usually some resistor or burnt leads on the unit that leads to the failure. I have the brain out of the car and can take a picture if necessary. Do any of you guys have experience with fixing these type of parts and if so maybe you can be of some assistance. Also, my AC Climate Control LCD display is very dim and I think it may be a similar problem. Any ideas? Also, on my new unit, the odometer shows 123k kilometers and only 2300 miles of use. It came out of a Canadian car. How is this possible? I'd like to use my old brain so it will show the original mileage.
Here's another thread about this:

Re: 90 GXE: Digital Dash issues...
I fixt my dash by renewing a small electro part.
Its a small black part with the code ZNR k 220 03 on it ,this is
somekind of a safety electronical fuse.
Try to find out if it is burned inside just by a little scratcing
with a small screwdriver or something.

What was specifically wrong with your dash?

I just took a couple pictures of the brain. I circled the areas that have some yellow liquid on the circuit board in red. What does that mean?

The digital dash has two parts ,the LCD part and the electronical
brain ,they are mounted with screws together .
You have to separate this two parts.
The znr is located soldered )on the electronical print.

Hey Anton
I'm pretty sure the yellow liquid is flux which is use to solder. Looks like someone tried to replace this chip either to fix the module or to disguise the mileage on the vehicle. I'm an electronics tech and from experience the success rate of removing and reinstalling that type of chip is very low. In a lot of cases you will get either bad joints between the board and the leads or solder wicking which will short two or more of the leads together. I sent you an e-mail explaining the 123Km - 2K Miles question. Did you receive it?

That chip was on the instrument cluster, wasn't it???
Part of e-mail:
For some reason that I could never figure out (must be something to do with the memory or maybe the Japanese just can’t count over 200,000(just kidding)) the digital odometer rolled over at 200,000. The cluster has 323,000 km or 323,000 x .625 = around 202,000miles.
Run2thesun's post: Wow thats weird. My car says 123 MILES but only 3000 KMS on the odometer! And I live in Canada!! Hmmm ever heard of car cloning ....
makes sense to...his car has 123,*** miles or 123,*** x 1.625 = 203000km ...rolled at 200000 so only shows 3000.
