Speedometer doesn't work!

I need help, yesterday my speedometer stop working.Instead of going to zero when the car is in park or stop. The needle goes the opposite of that going past 125. When i accelerate it goes to 85 and stays there. Has anybody had this probelm or know how to fix it.

thanks

Re: Speedometer doesn't work!

Either replace your speedo unit or take it out and resolder all the solder joints.

I have the same problem, I heard that this is caused by a faulty vehicle speed sensor, which is located in the transmission.

When the speedo quit working on my '92 gxe, I found that the speed sensor had become unseated from the transmission. The speed sensor is located on top of the transmission and is accessed from the top of the engine compartment near the firewall. Look down in the area around the fuel filter and below the brake master cylinder. You will see a black plastic cap about 1 inch in diameter with two wires going into it. This is the top of the speed sensor, it is locked in place by a bolt on the side. It goes in vertically. Loosen the bolt on the side and pull the cap up, then reinsert it firmly. I took a block of wood and tapped it firmly from the top with a hammer, then retightened the bolt. I had to do this about 4 years apart on two occasions. 230,000 miles and still going strong.

Bill,
Did the speedometer just quit working, or did the needle go all the way to the right as stated in the original post (suggests electrical problem)? Your problem sounded more like a mechanical problem.

It was my gauge cluster that was the probelm. I change the speed sensor and it still did the same thing in the initial post. Which kind of sucks because i spent 130 dollars for the sensor.

Mine just stayed pegged on zero and the cruise control would also not work until I got the speed sensor reseated.

Is the cluster very expensive?

speedometer

check this out, i put a new y-pipe,cat hi-flow muffler on my ride, when i got my car back i noticed that my speedometer wasn't working it stays on zero. i took the car back and they told me what you guys are saying.they said bring the car back so they can put it on a scanner to see what it was. i told them that i spent $400 on doing the job and i wasn't goin to put any more money on it.it was a mineke shop.i ended putting new manifold gaskest on both sides.now when i accelerate or gun it the atm light goes on and off then the meter starts working then it stops working. what do you guys think? still the speed sensor? thanks for the help......

I had the same problem with the inrtmitent speedo on zero then it crapped out all together. The cruise didn't work either. All I did was take off the sensor on the tranny and pushed the black cap with the wires back down in to the sensor and it works fine now. It saved me from paying for a new one. Hope this saves some one else from having to pay too.
