engine degreaser

Spent a good part of today cleaning my max. now i'm in the process of cleaning out my engine bay. i got most of the dirt and crud off just with some soapy water and a good shop rag. now there's still some hard junk to get off in certain places in the bay. was wondering what brand of degreasers you guys use. any recomendations? (spell check) and tips? thanks in advance

I just usually go down to the car wash and use their degreaser. Just be careful not to use the high pressure and try not to spray directly onto the electrical connectors. If you are VG, careful with the dist and coil

Yeah what Jeff said. Its preferable that you find a carwash that has a hot rinse. This will help the water evaporate faster.

I also use the carwash degreaser and leave the engine running.

It works great.

yea my max is a VG and was worried about spraying the engine with the car wash's pressure washer, afraid that it'll die on me. That's why i used some old fashion elbow grease . But i guess i can try and do what u guys said at the car wash. and yes they have hot rinse But is it ok for the elctrical system to get a little wet?

Well the hose will have good pressure w/o pulling the trigger. If you pull the trigger the water BLASTS out! The normal pressure is plenty.

I don't wash the engine w/ it running. The electrical system has connectors to protect it from the elements but it was never meant to handle ALOT of direct water pressure so be careful

Jeff92se,

So all you do is spray the degreaser on the engine, without pulling the triger. Do you rinse it off, or just let it sit? I've been looking for a good way to clean my engine bay too, but don't want to short circuit anything. Thanks for any tips...

I Degrease my engine once every 2-3 months and what i do is go down to those car was places spray degreaser in the desired place and then as a percation i cover electrical parts with plastic bags (like from the grocery store) and then i spray it off but i do not do this while it is running, after i have sprayed i take off bags and turn engine on right away and let it run for like 5 min i have been doing this for a while now and no problems at all oh and by the way its a vg

Castrol super clean works awesome but I strongly suggest masking off any painted areas you care about. Its real foamy so any breeze will blow it onto the sides of your engine bay or onto a nearby car so be careful. Of course you could just use simple green and not worry about this but it will take a little more effort.

Also recommend Simple Green. It is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. I do it at home and wash suds and dirt into grass since it doesn't hurt anything. I spray it on warm non running engine, let it sit for about 10 minutes and hose it off using high pressure low flow spray. Start car ang go for short ride to dry engine bay off. No white spots and it has a very pleasant fragrance. I have done it 4 times so far w/o any problems. Best price for it is at Walmart!
