Yes. I have a burnt trunk. Right above the muffler, in the shape of the muffler. I looked under the car and the heat shield is still intact above the muffler. I have attatched some pictures of the problem. The whole trunk smells like smoke and the carpet is singed along with the board which covers the spare tire. Amn I the only one who's got this problem? I'd rather not have my trunk ignite....

the heat shield may still be there, but how's the integrity of it?

for starters, hole in muffler or exhaust? keep anything flammable in your trunk, i.e. flares?

well, like I said, there's nothing in the trunk besides the spare tire now. I've felt that area after driving and it's really not that hot. I've got to do the f***** water pump today so I might as well check the heat shield too. There may very well be a hole in the top of the muffler that isn't apparent.

a hole in the muffler wouldn't do that. about the only thing that would was if the muffler itself was smashed directly onto the floor of the trunk- which you'd notice the rubbing at that point. otherwise, you'd be having problems with the entire exhaust heating up, not just the muffler.

Yes, literal hotness.
I'm right in the middle of the water pump job, so I may or may not have time to check the trunk thing. So far so good on the water pump. It came out easy, slid right out the bottom when it was rotated slightly. I can tell it's gonna take the rest of the day to get the little bastard back in there though.

So the water pump is relatively easy to remove/change? Is yours on a VE or VG? I feel im gonna have to end up doing mine soon, i'd like to have an idea what im gonna be in for.
As for the burnt trunk problem....i have never seen anything like that before. How long has it been like that? Just recently, or did you not know about it before?

on your car, changing the water pump will require removing the timing belt to get to it. might as well replace it since you'll have it off. also do the front main seal on the engine since it's the same type of deal...
plan at least a full day to do the job, if you've changed a timing belt before. if not, then plan a weekend. fun stuff.

I finally finished the VE water pump. That little SOB cost me almost 8 hours of my life. I guess I got lucky, cause it just dropped out the bottom. Took me over an hour to get it back in.
