I've heard both ways. Removing the cat will gain power and a little bit of deeper growl. And it will still pass. My boss tells me there's no chance in hell you'll pass w/out having a buddy that does emissions. Whats the 411? Is it possible or a waste of time?

Save your money for other areas of your car. Adding even a straight pipe will do slim to none for performance on an N/A, Auto VG.

there was a reason cat.s were added to cars. they aren't there for sh*ts and giggles. and just as maxse said you probably won't notice a difference anyways.

it reduces backpressure which on a n/a car is usually bad. my muffler fell of and i put on a magnaflow after many weeks of driving without and i did notice a very good increase in power. i hollowed out the cat in my gxe and noticed no gain at all. the only thing that i didn't notice was this TERRIBLE metalic exhaust sound. if you thought rice pipes were bad i think this sounds just as bad or worse.

I've got two Celicas... an '87 and '88... that had the cat's innards knocked out because they got clogged up. They both pass emissions in NC, but it's a lot closer to failing than with. One has 326K and the other like 222K so they aren't in their prime (thought still run pretty well) and could both use a thorough going over to be tip-top... after all something isn't right or they wouldn't have clogged. If your car is running decent... it should pass.

My two cents: the air we breathe has remained somewhat breathable because of things like catalytic converters. If your converter isn't bad, it won't cost anything to continue to do your part. You won't gain a lot from removing it if it's still good. Or, you could compromise and get a freer flowing Cat from Random Tech or others.

truly though, if our cars really poluted enough to really make it worse to breathe they shouldn't have airplanes flying period considering they use a lot of gas and they have no cat. they are also closer to the ozone layer that is supposedly getting destroyed very badly. i think we would see all out nuclear destruction from some alien race before people would die from no more oxygen. sorry if i made anyone mad with this statement but that's just my view.

There is no way in hell you would pass the new emission tests without a cat. Some may claim to pass but that isn't with the new testing standards. If your EGR is blocked you won't pass simple as that. Your NOx will be 2-3x higher with the EGR not working. Without a cat your HC and NOx would be through the roof! If you must have a testpipe buy one and keep the stock cat for testing. Also you should dyno the testpipe vs stock cat to see if it makes a difference.

Don't try passing emissions without a cat. If you were to get a test pipe you would have to put your stock cat back on before you went to get it inspected.

The other day I read that cows actually produce more harmful gases than our cars... interesting isn't it?

Anyways, not only will you not pass emissions, but you could get into some trouble for having it on your car.

As for an increase in performance; you may get a little bit, but that would most likely be because the old cat was clogged.

But seriously, don't remove the cat, you won't see much difference, and you'll just make sure your car tries to outrun the cows in the pollution race.

Dude in Georgia you will probably need a cat to pass emissions as they are getting stricter here. Your best bet is probably to get a free flow cat like you said in the last post.

Well, from what I've read, it looks like that your still going to have a cat. on your car!! LOL!! If you really want to, I say, " CHOP IT OFF!!" lol. But, I'd not reccomend it because A. It'll not give you any more horsepower and B. I've heard you get worse gas milege?

Cows produce methane, which is a greenhouse gas. It's not a CFC tho

If we all went vegetarian (and hence bred less cows) it would help more than running cats. I don't have a problem with running a cat tho. Every bit helps
