Timing From #1
Timing From #1
I am tring to make sure that my timing is correct after replacing my VTC. I can't seem to be able to find in the manual which front cyl. is #1. Can some one please let me know if it is the front right, closest to the firewall? or the front left, closest to the radiator? 92SE VE30DE.

On page EM-59 of your Nissan FSM, it says to attach the compression tester to the #1 cylinder. Looking at your engine from the grille side, it's the back left cylinder. The one that would be closest to your passenger side shock tower.
Hope this helps but didn't you put the engine at TDC from the get go? Did you mark the chain to vtc sprocket relationship first?

Yes, I thought I did have it in #1. I aligned the marks on the back of the cam with the arrow on the cam bearing, and also aligned the silver links on the chain with the marks on the pulleys. I used the front left as #1. The one closest to the grill. I then cycled the motor to see if they were still aligned up and they are off by about four links. I cycled it six times and they seem to still be off. From what you have told me I am off, way off.
The manual I have is on CD and I don't seem to be able to find everything that I need on it.

timing marks not staying on the mark.
I have gone back and aligned the marks on the chain and the sprockets and the arrow on the cam bearings, and #1 at TDC, but when I go through several cycles by turning the crank by hand the marks are not coming back up to the marks on the chain. I have cycled it 6 times. IS there something that I am over looking. I seem to be getting alot of noise from the VTC like it is jumping, would this cause it to jump timing? I have both the chain tensioners on.
I thought I would see if any one had any suggestions before I put this thing back together just to find out that I have got it in wrong again.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Lance
