Make Fun Of The Rookie!!!!!

Alright guys... If all goes well I'll be sealing the deal on my first
Non-American car ever tommorrow: A '91 Max GXE. Now bear in mind that I am completely clueless about mods for this car. It currently has a "warpspeed y-pipe all the way to the muffler", a cold air intake, and a venom 400 chip... which from having used SEARCH (I make it point to read ) doesn't have many fans. I guess it's fair to say the engine is pretty much stock. So here's the part where you guys get to throw some ideas on mods out to a novice with a couple of things in mind: It has to be affordable or able to be done affordably in increments. I'm sure you probably get the best results when you can go for broke all at once, but i really don't have that option. Things to consider: I live in the city, so pushing the 150mph envelope would be a rare occurance.... unfortunately. Super quick with good handling seems to be the way to go, with consideration for the ride big city streets give you. Oh... and it's an automatic. (Hey, you take what you can get) So fill me in guys!! What are the good points/bad points of this ride? Any quirks to keep an eye out for? Feel free to let loose and educate a New Guy.

Cheers!!

Bob

Re: Make Fun Of The Rookie!!!!!

as much as I like my vg, a ve would be a better vehicle for you to go with. Look around some more for a 92-94se max and you will be happy with it's performance.

You bought that blue? one off of Ebay, didn't you? I saw that thing while perusing for some Bose speakers. I hope you didn't believe his claim about how much horsepower it was actually running

92-94 SE's = 190hp VE engine
all other 91-94 models = 160hp VG engine

How much they asking for it??

Good memory re: ebay.

It's up to $3850 now... was gonna as high as 4100.
I took it for a ride, and it impressed me... good torque, smooth ride, only 77k for miles. Seems like an good combo of good looking and good performance. Thoughts?

After doing some research I kind of figured he was a bit off on THAT estimate. Still, it seems like a good buy... like I said though, I'm a novice about Maximas.

i've got a '90 GXE....VG engine. Click on my homepage to the left to see mods. It's pretty dern quick...although like [whomever] said - VEs are quicker. I love it to death. The only thing I'd get besides it is a 97+ 240SX or 97+ Maxima 5spd.

230hp YEAH RIGHT try more like 140 to 150 at the wheels, vg autos arnt known for there speed and theres not a whole lot more hp you can simply bolt on besides maybe nitrous so if its fast enough for you now than fine but dont expect it to get alot faster

$4k is too much money for that car, unless some of the custom work is reaally nice. You can get a VE (190 HP) 5-speed in MA for about $3-3.5k if you look hard enough, and then use the rest of the money to buy an intake and exhaust pipe. I can almost guarentee it wil be faster. If you don't want a 5-speed, maybe you could take a look at my car

Mabey he also has the WSP cat-back exhaust with the Y pipe?

they've answered the vg/ve question above. I feel anything over $3500 is too much for a vg. Heck I got my 5speed for $2800 2 years ago. If you have 4g to spend, look for a ve for about 3grand and use the remaining grand to work on preventives (preventive maintenance). That way you will have a good reliable car for a very very long time.

So get this... I went as high as $4300. Still out of the running, still not near the reserve. Find out he had it reserved at $6500!! Yeesh. Here's the link... not sure if he has the pics page listed at the bottom still up.

Yeah, don't pay more than $3000 for that car IMHO. From the pictures, it didn't look like that paint job was very expensive, and the mods definitely aren't that pricy. As for the stereo, I'm not audiophile, but those components don't sound too expensive either. Where exactly do you live in Boston btw?

Ok, I just checked out the info on that page. And he said he had 230hp with a warpspeed y pipe, CAI intake, and venom chip. Now why haven't the rest of you VG guys caught on to this trick? Yall might want to call him and get some tips. On second thought he said he had blue neon lights, that might have gave him the extra 50 or so hp.

do you have a number where this guy can be reached? Id like to call him and correct him on a few things, and to find out where he got that extra 70hp from and why he thinks a muffler with two tips is a dual exhaust. This guy is trying to get every penny he put into this car back out, plus I would be worried that he beat the crap out of the car.

for real man. I think that's ridiculous. heck if he had just those mods, imagine if YOU sold your car on ebay and painted your mods the way the guy did. heck, you'd probably sell it for like 9gs man! Granted it has 77k and that IS rare, but 4gs for a vg is ...sheesh!

He's now saying the book alone is around $5200 with the milage, plus alllll the money he's put into it (we've talked some) he couldn't posibly let it go for under $5000.

HMMMMM.....

Erebuni Body Kit
Venom Egnition chip?
CAI

A/T VG - IMO there's no way he's pusing 230 HP....at MOST 190-200. At the crank that is.

Like jason (N34JZ) said...call him and ask every detail about it. It could be a gold mine, probly not though.

I'm gonna send him what I got from kelly blue book online.... $3495 private party, $5020 if from a dealer. I figure that plus a few listings with similar mileage at around $3500 will hopefully get him down to what I can spend. I am still looking, but from an aesthetic and mechanical viewpoint, the car is really tight with few exceptions. I think what's killing this kid is that he's had most if not all of the work done at shops, adding the cost of labor onto what he's spent within the last two years. That's life I suppose. It pays to own some tools and be at least a little mechanically inclined in the long run, methinks.

Oh belieeeeeeeve me I am... I figured I'd be a fool not to educate myself a little first, so here I am. BTW, thanks guys. I've learned more about these cars in the last 72 hours or so than I expected, and now am looking hard at max's. Strange, having been a caddy seeker originally. If I end up with a max, my Gf's father will never let me hear the end of it since I was impressed as hell with his fully loaded 2003.

I'm sure I'm WAY late on this, but I just bought my 92 SE w/128K for $1476. It has the VE engine (of course), 5 spd and LSD. So I would continue to look.

I do have to say it has some problems though. Three out of four window regulators are shot ($30/each for fronts @ Aberedeen Auto, $59.26 for rears @ Courtesy Nissan), the windshield wipers don't ($30 in parts at Courtesy Nissan) and it has the PS pump whine which will get replaced in awhile ($140 in parts). The cheap price let me do my first mod which was installing 16" 1997 SE 5 spokes. I'm going to replace the crap tires that came with the rims with Kuhmo Ectsa 711 P245/50R16 which should give me dead on Speedo readings and lots of meat on the road. The rear bumper needs to be resprayed and color matched which around here runs about $100.

The last problem is the Stereo doesn't work, but I would've replaced it anyways so it doesn't count.

So for $2400 I'll have a excellent SE with most of the niggles worked out.

keep looking for what you want. You'll spend a ton of money trying to get a non-SE unto SE power levels.
