If it's a quiet whine in 1st gear and maybe a little bit in the other gears then your tranny is fine. If it's real loud that means the gears it's real loud in are wearing out. I had both my 1st and 2nd gears replaced and now the whine is much quieter.

When I first bought my 89 5sp it whined. Guy told me it was the main shaft in the tranny and just needed to be replaced. It whined bad! I took it to a shop and ended up having to replace it. Can you say $2,000+ for a USED tranny and install with clutch!? Ouch! Anyway, take it to a tranny shop, it may be the main shaft. Best way to tell is if you put it in neutral, release the clutch. If it whines, it's the main shaft, this is the only part of the tranny that turns in neutral.

O/D Whine
Mine only whines in O/D when it's cold, and it's not very loud. If the radio is on, I can't even hear it. Does anyone think I have to worry about this?

O/D? Uhm, If I'm not mistaken, everyone is refering to manual trannies? If your auto whines, my first thought would be tires. In O/D the rpm's drop (engine gets quiter) and your at a higher speed, so tires may be the issue here.

yeah, it kinda whines in all the gears. if i have the radio on at all i can't hear it. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. it's just enough that with the radio on at a talking volume, i can JUST hear it. if i move the stick around it changes a little too.
