1993 GXE Engine noise top end when cold

Has anyone experienced a noise coming from the top end of a VG? It is heard best when cold and reved past 2K. It seems to be coming from the front left (when looking in the engine compartment from the front of the car).

It kinda sounds like an internal bearing noise. It has sort of a rattle to it. The sound seems to dissappear when the engine is fully warmed up. The car has 124K miles.

Or you could be having upper valvetrain lubrication problems. ie.. oil gallies getting plugged from sludge etc..

Or maybe your oil fliter's anti-drain back valve is leaking and not hold pressure well.

At first I thought cam bearings, then I thought maybe it could be that variable timing thingamajiggy. I heard that ticks, not rattles.

The oil looked terrible when I bought the car. Maybe it is sludgy. I suppose I would have to pull a valve cover to check it out.

I am using a FRAM oil filter.

Matt is correct, in these cars this is the problem. My brothers 93 GXE does it as well!

Yeah funny thing about that, the VTC hardly EVER go bad on the VG. LOL!

engine

my brother has a 91 se and it has the same proble when it is cold. I seem to think the way your describing it its lifter tick. this could be cuase by the lack of lubrication or the lifter may have collapsed.

I am guessing that means that VGs don't have VTC. Well, it rules one thing out.

You must be a VE driver.
