Tranny removal - 89 auto Max

OK so I get a new one. I looked in the Chilton manual for removal of the old one and it says to remove the tranny and engine as an assembly. However, for the manual tranny, I wouldn't have to do that way. Has anyone ever removed an automatic without taking everything out? I'd like to remove it without having to do that. I figured if you can remove the manual you should be able to do it with the automatic.
Any suggestions?
