I don't know exactly what the problem is but my Car Squeaks like hell.. when I turn on my engine it starts squeaking like as if the belt was doing it.. it's not like hyper fast but like 2, 3 squeaks a second.. I can barely hear it inside the car but outside it's just a nightmare. This might be a simple problem but my mechanic told me it's a "unfixable" problem for most maximas of this (91') year... I think I am gonna have to get a new mechanic... I never heard of such a thing.. any info? thanks!

Nothing is "unfixable"
it's most likely he doesn't know what it is or how to fix it, or is just too damn lazy to figure it out.

I wonder if it could be broken manifold studs and a huge air gap??

funny you should mention that...I've noticed that when I start my car in the morning I have a very faint squeal (not horrid like yours) but it only lasts 2-3 seconds and I can barely hear it..only if I have my door open....my mechanic says my belts are still good though

mine started like that also.. I ignored it.. now it's this.. it gets worse in the rain.. and sometimes it does go away.. but lately it does so less and less.. now that I think about it in recent memory it has not gone away once...

check and tighen all your belts.. the most common one is the alternator belt.. if that doesn't fix it, try putting some belt dressing on them.. that can often stop squeals if the belts don't stop on their onw by tightening..
if that doesn't work, replace al the belts with new ones.. it's only about $20.

Take Matts advice

Try tightenig your belts, but first check your belts for ware and cracking. There are sprays on the market that you can use. Changing your belts is a good idea and it will not brake your bank. And if your regular belts are bad you should also take a good look at your (timing belt), Verry Important when the timing belt goes say goodbye to your engine.

Nice to know I am not the only one

I had the timing belt and all of the three drive belts changed about 3000 miles ago.

Recently, starting about 3 weeks ago, I am hearing strange squeaking noises.

It only happens around a RMP of about 1,000 and only when I step on the accelerator. In the morning, it starts up fine, however when I put the car in drive and take off a hear a squeak from the engine but as soon as I reach over 20 MPH or 1000 RPM, it goes away and never comes back until I slow down and continue again from a stopped position (like a traffic light). If I take my foot of the gas, the squeal stops. It is definately a concern to me.

It is getting louder and louder enough that it turns heads at my car.

I have a 1991 SE.

Also, I have noticed that it happens more often in cold weather than it warm weather.

Any ideas?

I know this problem all to well. My altenator belt was the culprit. I however just replaced all the belts to be on the safe side. Since that little fix the car runs smooth and I am noise free. The belts are doing something called chirpping. The second I replaced it the noise was gone.

Thanks for the info.

I will take the car back to the mechanic. Maybe it just needs tightening or loosening.

I will report back on the outcome.
