Exaust Leak

hey guys, got a problem (sounds familiar from me eh?)

i have an exaust leak, i am thinking it is actually around the headers/gaskets in that area

its getting worse and worse now, unfortunatly i have never done header work before, so any tips would be helpful

btw is it true that on our cars the studs break off for the header nuts?

but the main reason for this post is

What/Why does an exaust leak effect performance of my car, it makes no sense to me, and i would love to know

Thanks
Chris

Put your car on jackstands and start her up. Crawl under the car and listen. WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE HOT EXHAUST PIPES. You should be able to hear where the leak is coming from. If you are very careful, you can feel the exhaust leaking out. This is how I found a leak in my resonator and around the flanges that connect the cat to the b-pipe.

The studs that attach your exhaust manifolds to the cylinder heads could be broken. This is common. When you are under the car, you can see the rear manifold and some of the front manifold studs. You could also wait until the engine is cool and feel for missing bolts.

Exhaust leaks lower your back pressure and this has an adverse effect on performance. Also, if you leak in front of the o2 sensor, this can cause an incorrect fuel - air mixture and compound your problem.

wanna know what it is? Studs are broken. Now call up courtesy parts, order the following parts using the following numbers:
http://members.csinet.net/tisch/maxima/studs.htm
Now either get ready to do it yourself and save a lot of cash or pay someone to do it all...it sucks. Also get them all replaced. goodluck.
I'm getting mine done on monday for 145. at least one of the studs snapped during the week.
