what are some consequences of advancing the ignition timing?

i have read on these posts about advancing the ignition timing around 20 degrees to eek out more power upon acceleration from the engine. does this ultimately damage the engine, and, if so, what is damaged over time? also, what does advancing the timing actually do, ie, what is involved, what actually happens?

search google for it and you'll find tons of info; it's a fairly common thing for cars

as long as you run premium gas after doing it, you shouldn't have anything to worry about
