Bushings

I had to change my brakes and turn my rotors and i noticed what i believe to be the rubber bushings that are connected to the power steering assembly...I'm really not sure what it is connected to but i think thats what it is. anyway, the bushings are ripped to hell so i was wondering about the polyurethane bushings people replace their bushings with. sorry for not knowing what the hell i'm talking about but i hope yall understand.. thanks for any help.

p.s. its a slender metal shaft that goes into a rubber boot

If it is attached to the hub assembly, then it is the CV boot/axle. Once the boot is torn, then the axle will start to make a grinding sound around turns and/or acceleration. Replace the axle. Once the sound comes, you don't have too much longer.

its not connected to the center of the hub i believe whenever you turn the steering wheel this is the rod that turns the wheel.

either you're talking about the tie rod.
the joint that connects the steering rack to the wheel hub/knuckle.

OR

the boots on the steering rack. looks like a accordian or something like that?

then those are not bushings. They are tie rod boots (or bellows) if it is torn then I would go ahead and replace the inner tie rod (what the boot covers) in case there is grit in there and replace the boot.
