I don't know the specifics of it, but the extreme changes in temperatures causes the metal to flex back to its original shape (memory). I know a body guy who uses a variant of this technique. He just uses liquid nitrogen and no heat gun or anything, its hot enough here in Vegas.

damn i mention it once and everyone goes ape shyt on it. i bet stock on dry ice just went out.

anyway...all you science majors out there.

basics...
when you heat air it will expand...under normal conditions.
when you cool air it will contract.

now how to do it...
what you want to do is heat the metal with where the door ding is.
keep in mind this is NOT for the huge **** dent you made backing up to a tree or someone's car. this will probably only work on flat surfaces...hood, roof, trunk...not the crease areas either.

once the metal is warmed up..(air expanded around the metal)..you want to lay down a piece of dry ice on the panel covering the ding. hold it there until it's nice and cold. DO NOT HOLD THE ICE WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!!

now what just happened...
you heated the air around the metal..and QUICKLY cooled it. when you place the dry ice on the ding you created a small air pocket. that air in the pocket will contract quickly and the contraction will "pop" the ding back up to the surface. you can use a small body hammer and "LIGHTLY" tap the back side of the ding to help pop it up..DO THAT CAREFULLY.

disclaimer...
the following will not be my fault...
-if your paint gets messed up
-your panel gets warpped
-you burned yourself
-you have frost bite
-you fainted for inhailing too much dry ice smoke
-if it doesn't work
-if you decided to make a bomb with the dry ice instead of fixing the ding
-if you get people stareing at you for getting smoke to appear from the top of your hood
-if you decided to go retro and relive your disco days w/ the dry ice fog
-anything else i forgot to mention and you want to sue me on

for you cheaper...err "more frugal" members that can't search..DO NOT ask about this again in a separate thread...read this thread and learn, i will not post it again.

remember this is for the minor dings (IE small hail) not if you got your car jammed under a 18wheeler fix.

if you can't get it out w/ this then learn to do PDR or PAY (ouch) someone to fix your ding using PDR...
before you ask...(PDR = paintless dent removal)
if you want to know more about that... www.google.com
