all is better now, i left it unplugged overnight and the radio no longer says TEL. problem now is, because i unplugged my battery overnight, i failed my emissions inspection because a bunch of things were "not ready."

If you look in the 2002 FSM, there is a provision for a BUILT IN TELEPHONE PASS THRU !! I think you somehow got into that function. I have yet to see a Maxima with a wired in phone thru Bose unit, but according to the FSM it is possible and looks like it would come from the factory like that.
Maybe you got one of those cars. Or maybe FMS was written before the final options were set and phone feature never made it to the actual car.

OK, would anyone know anything about this? I have a 2K with stock HU and TEL message comes up quite often now and takes over the unit and then I can't do anything with it, no radio, CD, nothing... Any ideas?

I am just concerned if it is something outside the HU and that if I replace it that I will get the same prob again. Anyone that had this problem and replaced the HU - did the problem go away??
Here is what I found in FSM on the phone system: "Telephone" whatever(?) seems to be connected to the main harness at the M16 location of the harness at the driver's side under the dash (A3 quadrant):

OK, found some info: some '99 and '00 cars were made with optional phone system and some circuitry was built into HU. This option was $600+ so not many were sold with it but most have the capability that is not enabled. In my case, under extreme cold (which we had when message came on) something triggers it to enable and "receive calls". It is warmer now, in 20s, and it is not receiving calls from the local weather station
