I would think a neon rod (10-15 inches) would be more practical, IF you were deciding on doing that. Of course, you'd have to peel that puppy open and put the rod in there.

Did you do it? if you did... got some pictures for us?
I know I am kinda late and maybe some people are gonna get agitated by digging this back up... but better than posting a new thread.

I had a '92 240sx that I was thinking about doing the same thing you're talking about. But when I took the piece off, I didn't want to drill holes and tap into the brake wires or something.
Anyway... tell me if anything happened.

you might want to look at late 80s early 90s thunderbirds. I saw one the other day at night and the center piece which is similar to the maxima in that it goes across the trunk is lit up...it looked like it used leds.

anyway try to check one out at a junk yard and see how they have it or get the leds or bulbs out of it to use on the max.

I personally dont think it would look good but if you want to try it thats my suggestion.

i noticed when i took of mine there were plugs. i think it would be very easy to splice the wire that naturally runs to the trunk light into 3 or 4(how many plugs there are) and like u said, running some 194's in there.

i actaully havent done the project yet - but a friend of mine with a galant - he lit up his back where is say GALANT - with some 194 bulbs and some wires and silicon - it looks pritty good - the only thing im affraid of is that i wouldnt b able to get all the drill shavings outa the dam center piece - thinkin about tring it - i mean wut do i have to loose - i can always get anoter center piece from the junk yard or something rite...
anyway - if anyone has tried it -leme know - and if u have some pictures that b fantastic..
