anyone do r134a retrofit and happy with it?

Ive read some posts that it should not be done and some where folks said it worked for them.

If you did it what kit did you use and how did you get rid of the old regrigerant that was still in the system?

Does it cool as well as it did before? I had an rx7 retrofitted by a shop and it did not cool as well afterwords.

Just looking for feedback, dealer wants $225 to fill it with r12, local shop wants $160 to retrofit, and walmart has a retrofit kit for $33. The local guy said the only replace the fittings then replace coolant and oil which is what the $33 Walmart kit does from what I can tell so if I retrofit Id like to save the $130 difference if I could.

Thanks in advance.

It'll work, but from what my a/c tech friend tells me, it won't work well. Something about the freon compressor running at lower compression, so if you retrofit it for a refrigerant thats supposed to be used with higher compression, it won't be as cold. I'd love to be able to give you a more technical explanation, but I can't remember his exact words.

Dont do it. I did it last summer with one of those kits and it did not work correctly thereafter. So now I have no a/c this summer because it supposely skunk the expansion valve which can be caused by what Dark Lord friend the tech said to him. I mean you can do it but ill done some research lately on the net(mainly A/C forums and tech bulletins saying that too do it correctly you have to get better hoses and new compressor for the 89-91 Maximas because 92 and up have the new stuff I believe and better compressors. I guess I am going to have get a new expansion valve and go back to the old stuff which is going to cost even more now.

92's have R12.....or at least mine does. I think late 92's might have switched over to R134.

I belive everything works fine, it doenst get as cold as it should, compressor and clutch still work. I've never had a problem with it but after this winter the performance is not up to par. I think that some of the orings had dried up some cause it wasnt run over the winter and I lost some coolant. SO I think Ive only got a slow leak. Maybe the new r12 with oil would soften the orings up and expand them and stop the leak?

I just hate to put expensive r12 in and have it leak back out.

Ditto on where to get the autofrost and info about it.

Thanks guys

c'mon DO A SEARCH! took me 10 seconds on google. 1st link that popped up. do you want me to go there and recharge it for you?!!?
BTW you need a license to buy autofrost..just like R12.

and R12 is available and if you just need to "top off" you can get a small can of R12 for under $50...again you need a license.

Sorry about that, should have searched

How much would you charge to recharge? JK!

Did you get a license yourself? Doesnt look to bad, but I havent read all through the 69 page online manual.

Thanks for the link! I appreciate the help.
