made the change to AMSOIL

I changed my motor oil over to asmoil lastweekend!!! And man what a big difference!!! My car drives like a brand new car now!!! Acceleration is better, idle is smoother, and cold starts is as quiet as a baby sleeping!! Will change over to the gear lube next week for the trani!!!

0W30? 5W30?

I run Valvoline synthetic blend 5w30 and my car runs just as new. However, idle is a bit choppy on cold starts, but that's normal.

Previous to this oil change I ran 10W30 Quaker State Synthetic blend and it was ok.

well they are both good but you must remember that they aren't truelly synthetics because they are refined from crude oil which has natural impurities that react to extreme cold and hot temps. The amsoil has extended change intervals of either 6,500 or 25K while the best of the two you mentioned do 3000k maybe a little more. Check out the amsoil page and data charts.

I am an Amsoil dealer and have used Amsoil for about 20-years. Quite often people make a very common and catastrophic mistake when switching over to Amsoil. Keep in mind Amsoil is a very high detergent motor oil. The company highly suggests flushing the engine to remove sludge deposits in the oil pan. Failure to do this could result in a clogged oil filter in a very short period of time. Needless to say what this could do to your engine. A time honored procedure is to change the filter and add 1-quart of Amsoil. Run the car for about 500 miles and do the same thing, change the filter and add another quart of Amsoil. Run the car for about 1000 miles and do the switch over; full oil and filter change. To play it safe, run the car for about 2000 miles and change the filter and add 1-quart of Amsoil. I go 12,000 miles on an oil change replacing the filter every 3,000 miles and adding a quart.
This is the first Max I've owned. Bought a '90 for my son. Has 140k on it and runs like a dream. Very interesting posts on oil filters. I've changed to Amsoil using the procedure explained above using Bosch filters. Noticed the valve train noise and now understand about the dry engine syndrome and filter draining. Looks like I need to get to know a Toyota dealer. Assuming p/n 90915-YZZA2 is the right filter for this engine. Anyone please confirm.

Tucker, this is good informtion. I own a 92 Max, and also thinking of making the switch to Amsoil. Please clarify one thing. Are you suggesting the engine be flushed prior to starting your 'time honored procedure' or your procedure will take care of flushing?

I just need to call around to see who carries Amsoil in my area, I already bought the Toyota filter. BTW, you got the right PN.

Thanks,
Serv

No, the "time honored procedure" is performed instead of engine flushing. We feel that when flushing an engine you don't completly drain all the solvent out of the engine. Some will remain in small pockets in the heads and dilute the new oil. This is really a problem with non-overhead cam engines. The hydraulic lifters do not drain at all. The best way to get Amsoil is to go to their web sit and find the closest dealer. I don't believe Auto Zone sells Amsoil. Be prepaired to pay a hefty price per quart. But with the extended drain intervals, it's cheaper in the long run.

I am confused about one thing. What is the story about these Toyota filters. I have always used Nissan because they supposedly have a good check valve that prevents drainage of the filter while the engine is not running. Less drainage means the cams and valves get oil immediately on start up. Could some please enlighten me on the advantage of Toyota filters.

Dont know too much about oil. I am in NYC and was woundering what kind of oil I should use for the summer vs winter? 10 w30 summer 10 w40 winter? I ushally go to a "jiffy lube" like place and have them change it with their cheap brand. I am pushing 139k on my VG and remember hearing that synthetics werent good for high millage cars. Is this so? Would Amsoil be good for my car?
Thanks

I think (and don't quote me) that Nissan is no longer making the OEM filter with that check valve you mentioned. The Toyota filters apparently take care of the same function.

Now , before I do anything ...I would like to know which kind sae am i looking for my max ? 5-30 , 10-40 or 10-30 ? So tucker , r u saying that I ll have to take the oil pan out to flush the whole oil or just change the oil regularly like the most common thing to do this. My car is kinda little ticking and idle little rough which I m using the castrol-75,000 miles 10-40sae with stp oil filter. Can you please give me more specific info which sae and of course the toyota oil filter.

me i went all amsoil the motor oil 10w/30 full synthetic along with a amsoil atf84 oil filter, both do extended oil intervals the oil filter is like 12k or 6 months i think got to check, but better off staying with all one IMO. I live in NYC also, and on the few hot days we have had my temp gauge rides a little lower than before, plus the idle is even smoother. i have contact to a local dealer like 15 min from me saw like 2 weeks ago, will see him this week for the gear lube for the trani, to complete the amsoil process!!!
