trying to understand exhaust system mods for vg
trying to understand exhaust system mods
Ive been reading on here for a while but still do not understand what all the parts do and how they rate in terms of performance. The exhaust system consists: of y pipe, b pipe, muffler, catback and catalyic converter? Right? There are aftermarket parts available for all these pieces by warpspeed cattman etc. The big difference from oem y pipe and b pipe is larger piping and mandred bending which creates more airflow? ? What about effect of aftermarket mufflers designed for max not much increase in performance more for the throaty deep sound right? Catbacks (what are they?) and catalyic converters only need to be replaced if a problem is noticable. If there is a previous thread or page that answers all these questions just send me there and save you the time of typing otherwise dont flame and just answer the questions. Thanks, Oh yeah I see a lot of people using custom y pipes designed by shops. How do the results compare and what is approx costs? Of course the most common bolt on mod CAI: i.e. the package that warpspeed offers has anyone compared replacing just the upper pipe to doing both. Is there much of a difference after doing lower?(costs almost double the price for both. I know none of these will make my car a speed demon but just to make me feel faster in my 160 hp vg
new y pipe has better flow because of the shape of it compared to the stock one, much less restriction
check out my page www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html in the how-to and I have pics of stock and WSP y pipes
I'd recommend getting CAI and Y from warpspeed

Ok... let's try to take this point by point....
*Exhaust system goes in this order from engine, manifolds, Y-pipe, catalytic converter, b-pipe, and muffler...
*Yes, there are a few options to go with concerning all those parts except for the manifolds... they're just well designed so there's no reason to mess with them...
*The way the pipes are bent and the elimination of pre-cats are what give the WSP Y it's biggest gains... the B-pipe makes some very slight gains and those are also thanks to the mandrel bending...
*All the resonator does on the B-pipe is act like a pre-muffler... keeps things quieter basically...
*Aftermarket mufflers will net you a slight gain, but only if you choose the right right one...
*You will never sound like a V8 (though this opinion could vary from person to person) because you don't have the displacement... that isn't to say you can't have a louder and deeper exhaust note...
*Catbacks are just a simple way of grouping all the components from the catalytic converter back... so getting a catback exhaust means getting everything from the catalytic converter back replaced... get it???
*Catalytic converters will provide a slight gain if you replace your stock ones with a high flow cat... or better yet... a test pipe (or straight pipe to some) from WSP... keep your old cat tho if you go with the test pipe, you need it for whenever you do emissions testing...
*Cost varies greatly by the components you decide to get, it's up to you to shop around...
*The whole point of a CAI is to pull colder from outside the engine bay to the engine... replacing the upper part just creates a pop charger system without a resonator which in itself gives pretty good gains and a louder intake, but if you spend money for the CAI why not just go ahead and use the whole thing???
At any rate, I hope that answers all your questions... cause you've reached your limit for the month...

the shop seemed a little shady and stole all the coins out of my coinholder, but it was definitely worth it in the end

It will definitely change because of how the exhaust resonates in the muffler (because it is built differently). But to get the deepest and loudest tone possible you'd have to replace the whole system... go without a resonator on your B-pipe... and remove the resonator on your intake... This just makes one want to stay at WOT all the time for the roar tho...
