Odometers Quit working, SpeedO and Tach fine..??
I have a 94 GXE and the odometers {main and trip} have stopped working. The speedometer and tachometer still work fine.
The speedo and tach get there signal from the speed sensor on the tranny, right? So the speed sensor on the tranny and wireing to the speedo and tach should be OK.
Does any one know how the odometers interface with the speedo? Do the trips use the same signal?
Seens to me there must be some kind of mechanical connection behind the dash. Any one have this apart that can shed some light on how the odometers move would be greatly appreciated...........
Thanks, Jim

mine started working off and on a couple months back
I took apart the dash and took out the gauge cluster (check my page in the how-to section for clock fix). Once that's out, you need to remove a couple screws and pull out the circle holding the temp and gas gauges and then a couple more screws on the backside hold on the odometer and trip meter assembly. There is just a couple wires going into it and then it has a small motor that drives a large white plastic gear.
I was able to fix it by simply cleaning that gear. I found one small piece (almost like a grain of sand) and I think that's all that was causing my problem since it hasn't come back in teh last 5k or so. Yours might be something similar and it's easy enough to take apart and look at.
good luck

My odometer stopped working when my car was still new (20K miles) It seems this was a problem with our VGs, although not terribly common, or perhaps not well documented. I know most people selling a used car might "forget" to mention the car really has 20K more miles than the odometer indicates. Who else has had problems with thier odometers and at what milage?

Mine has been doing this for a while too. I just bang on the top of the dash to get it back working again. Sometimes primative methods of repair do work. Craig, thanks on the info on a possible fix to the problem. I was going to open up the gauges to see if i could see the prob but have been to lazy.
