Just got a '89 GXE, Some Issues Though...

First, the background. I had an '86 Volvo 760 Wagon (got it as a clunker for the wife) that needed the turbo replaced (oil leak into it ruined it) and lost it's exhaust before we retired it. It just sat in the driveway for the past year now. Enter one of my family's friend, he shows up and states he's been looking for a 760 Wagon to restore, has an exhaust and turbo already, just needs the rest of the car. In exchange, he offered me his '89 Nissan Maxima GXE. So, I took it.

Enter my problems. I knew when I got the car the exhaust was n/g, new one is already waiting for me to get the car on the lift. The window regulator on the passenger window went the day after I got it, but a piece of scrap to keep the window up until the new one gets in is just fine.

The trouble is the darn car did not come with an owner's manual. Usually this is fine, as I can wing it, however, I've found this particular car to be quirky. I like quirky, but only when I have the manual . Does anyone know where I can find a copy of one, preferably free .

The other problem is the car came with keyless door entry. The man I got the car from did not know the combo, but I figured it was no big deal, I'd take the glove box out and peek at the plaque. Trouble is, I think the code got changed as attempted the code just elicits beeps from the pad and nothing else. Then again, to be honest, I don't know how to actually work the pad... is there anyway to reset the code without having to pay a dealer near $100?

Finally, I have an odd electrical problem. It seems when the car is off for extended periods of time (defined: beyond 6 hours), the radio and clock act like they've lost all power. Could this be corroded terminals, or are there other causes I can check into?

Thanks for all help in advance .

There's two sets of numbers for the keyless entry system. The first is the fixed number, the second is the code number.

Here's how to reset the code number using the fixed number.

1. Press the start/clear button.
2. Enter the 7-digit FIXED NUMBER. A beep will sound for 6 seconds.
3. Enter a 4- to 7-digit personal CODE NUMBER while the beep is sounding.
4. After the personal CODE NUMBER is entered, the beep will sound at short intervals. This indicates successful entry of the personal CODE NUMBER.

If wrong numbers are entered, the beep will not sound. Press start/clear button, then enter a correct personal CODE NUMBER.

The following numbers cannot be entered as CODE NUMBER;
Any number where all digits are on the same button. EXAMPLE: 1-2-1-2, 3-3-4-4
Any number requiring sequential operation of the buttons. EXAMPLE: 1-3-5-7 or 7-5-3-1
Any number with 3 of fewer digits.
Any number with eight or more digitrs. Continuously pushing random buttons will cause the system to stop functioning for 6 to 30 seconds.

Once you've set the personal CODE NUMBER to what you like, hit start/clear then enter the number to test it. Press the window or the trunk buttons immediately after if you want to open the window or trunk.

Before leaving the vehicle be sure to press the lock button.

As for manuals.. well, you can try ebay. Or see your Nissan dealer. Or call 1-800-247-5321 where you can order service manuals and owners manuals for all models.

1993 service manual part # 2J3093
1993 owner's manual part # 3J3093

Hope that helps.
