93 Maxima overheating

After driving my max for about 20 min in 100 + degree heat, the temp starts to creep all the way up to H. If I put her in neutral and rev it to 4000 rpm for about 15 seconds, the temp drops right back down.

Anyone ever have this problem?

Possibly, your water pump is failing? When you rev it up, the pump spins faster causing more coolant to flow through the engine and the rad. At normal speeds, perhaps your pump is too worn to flow enought coolant. Could also be a belt slipping? Also, make sure both your cooling fans are coming on, especially if you are running A/C.

The fans are working strong. The belts are tight. I wonder if the water pump blades are corroded away.

I also heard that air gets trapped in the cooling system on these cars. I have removed the bleeder screw and ran it. But I am not sure if this got all of the air out of the system. When I put the coolant in, I did not know about the bleed screw. I removed the screw after the coolant was replaced. Does any know if I need to totally drain the coolant and refill with the screw out to completely bleed the system?

Another possibility is a cracked crankshaft. The crank on this engine can break behind the harminic balance. The engine may run, but overheat occasionally. As it twist more and more the timing will eventually be off far enough that the car won't start. I've experienced the problem myself. Two choices, replace the crank or the engine. There's actually a factory service bulletin out there somewhere that describes this possibility on the VG30E.

I have had a similar problem but sometimes the gauges in the maxima go bad. I know this may sound stupid but mine is and had been for quite a while(Going to fix soon). My car used to overheat a lot and I put a new thermostat in it and the gauge worked a little better but still does not work properly but I know my car is not overheating because I have had it checked out many of times. I think the gauge is like $110 from the nissan dealer with a discount from the org from certain dealerships like Courtesy Nissan.

This is just my 2 cents but could be something else going bad.

'Twas the water pump. There wasn't a blade left! It was a spinning hub. I don't know how the car even went 20 minutes.

By the way, if you ever decide to change your WP on VG30E, set aside a whole day. What a job. Get a timing belt too. It's only one extra bolt to change it at the same time.
