noisy lifters

I thought the noise was coming from my vtc's in my 92 Nissan Maxima SE. But, it appears that the noise is my lifters. It is pretty annoying, is there anything I can do to quiet them down? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

i use cd2 lifter quieting formula. it's an oil additive and it comes in a yellow plastic bottle. you can get it at autozone or walmart or anywhere really.

add it when you change your oil. until i grounded them, this stuff actually quieted my vtc problem for a good 1000 miles. warning, though: don't add it any more often than about 3000 miles. i did once and my crank seal started leaking. once it gunked up a little again, it stopped. haha.

if you really want to fix the problem for good, you'll have to tear your engine down and clean everything. not fun and not worth it just for noisy lifters.

do noisy lifters indicate that something is going wrong?

Usually no. It just means that it's gunky in there. However, if a lifter really jams up, the cam will get worn down and then you have a problem... which is that you'll need a new cam. But usually cars with sticky lifters are ok.

I don't know a ton about this so I invite anyone who knows more to chime in.

how hard is it to get to the lifters? i don't think mine click but with close to 120k miles they can't be that clean. also would it benifit me in any way to take apart the engine and clean it? i've been wanting to do this for awhile but afraid i might mess something up. i figure it would be a good learning expirience and helpmy car out.

I suggest if your lifters aren't making noise, just leave them alone. Does anyone else have any experience with noisy lifters & fixing this?

my lifters are very noisy they started making noise after my oil got low do to my front crank seal leaking and me not checking the oil level enogh i replace the seal and no longer have a leak but theres still a pretty bad noise and my vtc are grounded ive been told i need to fix the problem soon or my engine is goin to go kapoof by a few friends some of whom have been machanics for some time so i trust them im thinking about just replacing the heads but rebiult ones are 500 for the pair plus id still have to rebiuld the vtcs so im just kind of debating on what would be the best option but your lifter noise proboly isnt as bad as mine

Yeah, my lifters are noisey too... I grounded my VTC's thinking the ticking were the VTC's, but the noise is still there sometimes. Oh well, guess Ill try that stuff on the next oil change, which is in about 300 miles. 213,836 mile point actually...

For noisey lifter not associated with the VTC problem, you can use a motor flush at your next oil change (follow the instructions). It definitly will make a difference.

What is motor flush, & is it safe for the engine?

Dont use Z-max, it doesnt work. It requires that you put the stuff in again after an oil change, so they just want your $$.

An oil flush is a bottle of solvent designed to remove slugges and varnish in the engine. It will free up lifters, remove crud on the oil pickup screen, flush crud plugging up oil gallies that are all over the engines oiling system. You can buy it at any autoparts store. You use it just prior to changing the oil/filter.

Is it different than an oil detergent like CD2? I use that, but I put it in with my new oil when I change the filter.
