two-part question here:

1) although my check engine light isn't on, i'd like to determine if any sensors are failing or have failed. my engine has 125k on it and it seems like (from what everyone here says) the o2 sensor or ks might be bad. will reading the ecu tell me any of this, or should i do it myself with a multimeter? (which i would have to buy -- any rec's?)

2) is there anywhere to go besides my dealership to have the computer read? there are napa, carquest, and autozone near me. only the autozone is really worth its salt, though.

There is a proceedure in a chiltons maunal that you can buy at an auto part store to check the O2 sensor.

Just a side note: O@ sensor is not hard to change.
