1991 Maxima SE (Bose) -- need CD player advice
Howdy!
Have what I hope will be a couple quick questions -- probably beneath the vast majority of visitors to these forums -- but after doing some searching on the Net and in these forums, I'm not so sure they will be...But here goes:
Right now, all the components of my '91 SE stereo system are STOCK (that is, Bose)...Including the cassette deck. I'm poor, but I'm tired of the crappy sound I get running a Discman into the deck. So what I really want to do is just yank the deck out and shove a CD player in there. Is that possible? Wise? Feasible? Difficult? Keeping in mind that I don't have a lot of money to blow, what should I be looking for in terms of wattage? I'd be happy to stick with a CD player that is rated at the same wattage as the deck, but I can't even find any info on what the wattage is on the deck!
One more thing...Since I'm probably going to get something from Sony -- everything I've ever bought Sony has been bomber -- here's what looks to be a reasonably exhaustive listing of Sony audio stuff that would be a great way to tell me what might work in my auto:
http://www.egrabow.com/archive/sony.htm
But if you feel I might find a better value for my money in another brand, please feel free to share that info.
Many thanks in advance!

Assuming you are keeping the stock speakers, you can't just throw in another CD player. To work with the bose you have to get a special adaptor to get it to work. The adaptor is expensive, around $90.00, and this is the route I took. The thing lasted about 6 months will the whole stereo went dead. I know your short of money, but take my advice and do it right the first time. Replace the whole system. You can fit 6x9's in the back and 4x6's in the front without changing any of the Bose covers. Looks obsolutely stock. Even if your short of money, do the whole thing or nothing at all. Just my 2 cents...which probably is not worth that.
Hmmmm...
So I can buy an adaptor for $90 and stick a CD player in there or I can replace all four speakers (which I have to imagine will cost me more than $90? and will I need to do anything else in addition to that?) and then stick a CD player in. I appreciate the advice, but why does it seem like kind of a waste to me to replace what are (for now, at least) four perfectly good Bose speakers that I'm happy with?
What's this adaptor officially called (helpful for online searching) and where did you get yours? I'm not above visiting some local junkyards to see if I can strip one out of a dead Maxima for a cut-rate price...
Thanks,
Hagn

I got mine at Car Toys, I would contact them, they should know what I am talking about. My point about the speakers is that if your car have over 110k the stock speakers probably don't have a lot of life left. I got that adaptor and my stock speakers crapped out about 4 months later. As mentioned before, just telling you my experience. Your stock speakers could last for another 5 years and you won't have any problems at all.
I have the adaptor in mine and one by one, the speakers crapped out over about a 9-month period. Right now I just listen to AM radio on the two blown speakers that still produce sound. All four have had it. When I am on vacation I am going to put in all of my quality stuff that I had in my 200SX. MB Quart seperates, Phoenix Gold amp and JL subs.
I have an Alpine deck and I know that that isn't the cause of the problems. Bose run at a different ohm load (I believe it is 1 ohm instead of the traditional 4 ohms) than normal car stereos and I think Bose wants THEIR stuff to be used with THEIR stuff.
I would HIGHLY recommend you just listen to whatever you have in there and save your money until you can replace the whole system. Or, go on ebay and buy a Bose CD player if you insist on keeping the Bose speakers.
My adaptor was less than $90 (I thought it was more in the $30-$50 range, but it was a couple of years ago) at Magnolia Hi-Fi, but no matter how much you pay, you will probably be throwing that money away.
Just my 2 cents!
