buying 1994 Maxima SE questions/advice
ok so im still looking for a new car after the untimely demise of the 626. A local dealership has this 94 maxima for about 5000, the interior is nice and it drives like a new car almost i was so impressed.
The only thing holding me back is the milage which is 160k. now has anyone had expericence on this cars and high milage. Its going to have to last me through college and me driving home every once in awhile (200 mile trip). these cars dont fall apart like right when they hit 170k or something like that do they?
The dealer is going to give me a very nice plan (interest free) since im local and shes nice apparently, so id be paying like 60 bucks a week for almost 5 months after my downpayment which is do-able.
now I took its for an instpection and it came up fine and the carfax was good aswell so its looking good. I mean its just doesnt drive like it should considering the milage; the engine is still strong, the gears shift smoothly, steering is percise, the suspension is soft, and all the interior options are in fine working order (ac, cd player, sunroof, ect...).
thanks for any help

Dont let the mileage scare you on Nissans. My '90 only has 78k miles and it's got a couple problems. Mileage doesnt really have a lot to do w/ what kind of problems you have if you think about it.
If you're looking to spend $5k....try considering a 95/96 4th generation

My first Maxima made it to 165k before I traded it in and the only thing I had to replace was the clutch slave cylinder. It did need the manifold studs replaced, but I left that for the dealer. It even had the original clutch! That is hard for me to believe because I used to drive it like I stole it, too.
I would talk them down to about $3500. If it were private party, maybe even less. I paid $2500 for mine and it came with four studded snow tires on rims, an Alpine CD player and only had 140k.

Like these guys said: don't be afraid of the mileage. I bought my 87 SE with 182k and change on the odo, and it was about as perfect a 14-16 year-old car could've been. The car had the original engine and tranny, and I believe it was on its second clutch. The car was still running like a beast at 227k+ when I traded it in (stupid of me); the one thing it needed big time at that point was a new suspension.
Is this Maxima you are looking at a previous one-owner car? That might be why the price is up. My current 93 SE is a one owner car, and it shows.
The things I would make sure have been fixed are the injectors (1600 bucks to repair if they haven't been), the timing chain of course (another 1200), and the suspension (price depends). Those are the three major areas from my personal experience. Also check to make sure there isn't any heavy vibration at speed. I know tie rod ends sometimes go on Maxes (happened to my 87).

it is a one owner car so maybe thats why. The dealer has replaced 2 of the injectors already along with new brakes and the timing chain was fixed by the previous owner. but man the dealer has pretty much sunk their teeth into that price even after i said i was going to put 2k down. What was left to finance with was lowered to 2500 at like 60-70 a week interest free. It does blue book for like 5,500

Hmm, doesn't sound too bad. I paid 5300 for my 93, which was going for about 5500 at the time on kbb.com.
I'd ask which 2 injectors they replaced though, because if they're under the intake manifold, the third may not be too far behind, and you don't want to hear what a mechanic has to say about that 6 months after you buy the car (this exact thing happened to me, btw). It's a good idea to replace all injectors at once (IMHO), since injectors are a big deal on Maxes of this generation. Also ask what gas they've been putting in the thing, if they've done more than one fill up. That could be very crucial, ESPECIALLY when we're talking about the injectors. If it's had anything less than 91 put in it over a period of time, that's asking for a thin wallet down the road.
Aside from that, it sounds like a smokin' car. You'll have to take pics of it if you do buy it. I hope my reply doesn't make you think too hard. Maxes in general are good purchases, they just sometimes have expensive parts.

man and people said I was going to want too much for mine at 5500...with rebuilt VTCs, new knock sensor, new paint, stillen kit, stillen wing, 17" wheels and tires, new suspension with all new bushings (front and rear), new Katzkin leather seats, 2.5" exhaust, studs replaced, and so much more.
I still say that 5k is too much but actually I guess it depends on what part of the country you live in. I know that is way too high here in MS.

yeah it just depends on where you live. I have seen a few ve 5 spds. here that were in good shape with <100k asking around 3500...and not sale for a while.
I saw one that was a 93 piece of crap VE 5 spd. and they were asking 5500 for it. It sat at that lot for maybe close to a year. That was at one of those buy here pay here lots though...they always ask way too much and get a down payment just to reposses it later on and re sale it...its a visous circle lol...but they make money doing it.
