I don't know if non BOSE are different or maybe the owner before you replaced them with the round ones, but stock BOSE is 6x9 so you just unbolt the old ones and put the new ones in

6.5"

Non-Bose cars have 6.5" speakers stock. I just replaced mine last year. There's plenty of good 6.5" speakers on the market today, it would be a lot easier than custom fitting a 6X9 back there (would require snipping the metal). For best bass reproduction, your best bet is probably get some decent 6.5"s and seal that area tightly.

If I remember correctly, even with the Bose system, there is still a 6 1/2 hole there. The only difference is that the 6x9's are bottom mounted, right? So, find a wrecked Max and pull the rear speaker brackets and get some good 6x9's, like Kicker comp freeair 6x9's! They sound really good!

everything I've heard...

BOSE = 6x9" bottom mounted speakers or 6.75" top mounted speakers
Active Speaker System = 6.75" top mounted speakers or 6.9" bottom mounted speakers if you can find a mounting bracket in a junk yard from a 3rd gen with the BOSE.

i was thinkin of puttin 6x9's in my rear deck when i was doin my system. its not worth it. you would have to cut the rear deck speaker openning bigger with something. just buy some top line 6 1/2" speakers and youll be happy with them. listen to a good 6x9 and a good 6 1/2 speaker. there really isnt a difference.

top mounted speakers are going to be "placed in the hole" while bottom mounted are going to have to be screwed underneith the hole. any clearer?
