300zx Z32 Cams

I heard a rumor that that the Z32 cams are a direct replacement for ours but they have more lift. If this is true has anyone done this switch. I am afraid of running valves into pistons with the increased lift.

You have nothing to lose by trying. Why don't you get a baseline dyno done and then swap cams?

Nothing but the 8 hours needed to replace the cams and chance at screwing up if you miss align the chains/sprockets.

why put turbo cams in an n/a motor?
why go through all that hassle for 6 hp?
i can think of 10 different ways to gain 6 or more hp

Ok guys hers the plan for the engine. I have a turbo waiting but I also want to build the motor up. I just want to know if i can get some Aftermarket cams for a z32 and have them fit. If they do I dont have to get aftermarket cams built for my special application.

the vg max's are sohc motors, always have been

Err....

Well we got a dyno here. But the problem is do I wanna go through all that trouble. Probably not. I think with the setup I have instore then I wont need these cams. It would be nice if they were a direct change over.

Steve
Thanx Guys

Re: Err....

Here is the easy solution order new billet cams from nissan. There are going to be expensive since you have to order 4 of them and they should retail around $175-225 each cam. After you receive these cams contact a camshaft company (Crower, ISKY, peaco, Web, Schnider) and give them all the info on the stock cams and supply a dyno chart, so they can know how the powerband looks like. After that you tell them how much of a lopey idle you can tolerate and where you want the powerband to be shifted too. If your going with a turbo motor I figure a 260* duration grind would be a good bet. Turbo SR20DEs and VG30Es have good results from those type of turbo cams.

bah... why not just buy a used engine for half that and rip the cams out of it, then send them to be reground? they can regrind a used cam as well as they can regrind a new one.

I wouldnt take stock cams out of a car and get them reground I had this idea already, the problem with that is that you cant get the lift to change or the center line, You can only change the duration.
What I need to do is get the specs off of a z32 or a SR20DE and order a custom made forged cam set but that runs somewhere between 1500 and 2000. So i guess I am at a standstill where I need to modify the internals to be optimized for the pre-existing cams. I am ok with this as I was planning using the stock cams anyway. I can always modify the valves instead.
If you guys have any other ideas I will take that.

When you say it takes a lot of modification to get the z cams to "function" right, are you referring to mechanical modification or something else? Meaning, the Z cams are not a direct swap for the VE motor. What exactly was involved in stalling the Z cams? Did you use a NA or TT cam and are they any mechanical difference between the two besides the cams profile.

i used n/a cams. they are no means a direct swap. a mechanic buddy of mine spent 3 days working on them to get them to sit right and the car to run {nissan tech for 30 something years}
then dyno time, messing with spark plug combo's, fuel pressure, timing in general, different types of fuel

for the little bit of hp i gained, its not worth the money.

When you say "to get them to sit right" are you referring to the journals not lining up, journals too big/small, cam profile causing problems, hard time bolting the gear on, what? I'm asking just to pick your brain because I'm the type of SOB that might buy something, sit on it for years then 2am in the morning start wrenching just because the urge hits me. Not saying I will or will not do that with these cams but when the urge hits it hits even if just for a learning lesson with anything.

Also before you started messing with plugs, fuel pressure and timing how did the engine run, any idling or driveability problems?

what year is your car, and what trim is it? (SE or GXE)
or go by the vin..
I believe all VEs will be JN1E__________
and VGs are JN1H_______
may be wrong on that tho.
