Bad Transmission?
Bad Transmission?
Last night I was trying to make a quick U-turn...apparently one too many...and the car would no longer go into reverse and it would drive no higher than 25mph.
My mechanic said it was a bad tranny.
$1200.
Is this a fair price for a complete tranny replacement?
Thanks!
Nick

I called another shop and they were charging me $1900, but theirs is a complete rebuild.
I took it to my trusty regular mechanic. My family's been going to that place for over 20 years.
I need to ask about warranties, but I know I can trust this guy...I know those maybe famous last words, but I do trust him. I'm sure he'll give me some kind of warranty.
What he said was with regular maintenance and good driving, the rebuilt one should last as long as the original one. He said he's done several Maxima tranny rebuilds. He told me that he sees this problem quite often.
$1200 is not a complete rebuild.
He recommended me to replace some other parts (better parts no available) so that I won't have to worry about them later on and open up the tranny again.
I think he mentioned something about Solonoids.(spelling???) and some type of converter (gear converter???).

OK. I've been reading up on some of the other posts (search wasn't working for me earlier) and I see that some have mentioned over-heating problems after tranny rebuild.
Is this a problem for everyone?
I should mention that I have an Automatic transmission.
Thanks
Nick

he was probably talking about the torque converter and the solenoids...its best to find out waht exactly is wrong first so you know if its necessary to just replace seperate parts or rebuild the whole tranny. IMO if its more than just the solenoids, I'd front the extra few bucks(if you have it) for the whole rebuild. our trannys suck from the factory so when they do go its better to get it all taken care of at once. and a good warranty is a definite...I'd say 12 months at least. when I rebuilt mine several years ago it was $2000, but also came with a 3 year warranty.
Yep.
Actually I called another shop (referenced by another thread in there) and the guy quoted me $1900 and went on about the Solenoids and the converter telling me that they have "better" ones now that won't fail as much.
So I called my mechanic with this info and he knew what I was talking about. The $1200 did not include them but he told me if he was the owner of the car he would replace the Solenoids and the torque converter...might as well since the Tranny will be opened up anyways. He's charging me around $125 for each of those items so I told him to just go ahead.
As for the warranty, his shop is located 2 minute from where I live and I know the guy for years. I'm sure he'll honor any problems I have but I will definitely confirm that in writing...
Any answers on people mentioning about over-heating after tranny rebuild?
