Engine Question

I own a 1992 Nissan Maxima SE with the 3.0L V6 VE30DE engine. The car has 158,722 miles on it.

A few months ago while driving the car just died on me. When trying to start the car again, it wouldn't stay started.

A few months ago, I performed the VTC rewire because 1) The ticking noise was occuring even afrer the car was warmed up 2) I was getting tired of explaining to people (and the folks at Jiffy Lube )what that "ticking" noise was under the hood. The VTC rewire did not take care of my problem.

The day before the car died, I noticed that the ticking noise from the engine changed in pitch and would sometimes would just silence completely.

When I try to start my car now, sometimes it will start with it idling very low. Whenever I try to give it gas, it dies out. Once it's dead it appears that if I let it sit a while, it will start up again with a "very" low idle (talking less than 100 rps .. if that) and when I give it the gas .. it dies.

Although I am a very computer savy person, I had trouble doing a search through the current boards.

If possible, could someone list for me a step by step troubleshooting guide as to what this problem could be.

Thank you in advance,

In layman's terms please, I know enough about auto mechanics to be dangerous.
