My friend has a 94 VE 5 spd. We were racing a BMW and slowly approached 140 Mph. AT that time the engine began not reponding. Pressing the accelerator did nothing, its like someone took the key out of the ignition. I told him to downshift and pop start it and all there was was a loud backfire. so we pulled over the car restarted after laying on the starter twice for 5 seconds. The car then would continue the same syptoms without stalling the rest of the way. He says problem has always been there since 132k and no one can figure it out. He has passed the last three emissions test
He suspects a faulty Cat due to his barely passing the mass emissions test IN Nov 2002 ( high Co2 but the Nox2 was normal). I figured no clogged cat would let you touch 140mph. This is a head scatcher for me, he has a stillen intake and a stock exhaust (190K). I can smell rotten eggs when he drives and I know its running rich. Yet he passed his emmsions test 6 months ago.
electonically he has new igniton coils(171k) , and a recent CPS (error code at 171k)
I suspect an air fuel problem choking the engine but am reluctant to name the cat suspect.
He uses 93 octane
THANKS

Hey more than one person uses my Forum name and my feelings are hurt =0)!
if you smell sulfur at all, that means the cat is plugged to some extent. it may be just enough to not let you go 140 tho.
but do me a favor: when you replace his cat, send the old one to me. maybe it'll make my car go 140...

does he notice his car is getting slower my car went from high 14s to high 16s in 3 weeks do to my cat being clogged test pipe fix that fast and my emisions were passed 2 months prior to this happening

The ECU has a speed limiter at 140mph.
A rich mixture is definitly due to bad injectors. With that kind of mileage they should all be replaced.

if it stopped at 140, then how the hell did i get a ticket for 160+ in my old 92 se 5spd????
i got to 150 in my ve 5spd but when i first got it i thought it was governed to 128 i tried several times to go past it and about a year after getting the car i tried again and it went past it very strang somthing must of been wrong i blame coils since they make my car die, sputter, jerk and stall somtimes

i'm going to be the only **** here to say this, but if the problem only happens at 140......... its like the old doctor joke, 'hey doc, it hurts when i do this, what should i do?', and the doctor replies, "dont do this!". it's obvoius you werent dooing it at a track, so i'm not going to say keep it legal(cuz i dont do the speed limit either), but at least keep it reasonable. we dont want the next post seen on here being: 2 kids in a 3rd gen scraped off the side of the road after finally going over 140.

What he said. If the problem only happens at 140MPH, then I really do see that as a problem. If it was at 80, then that would be another story.

What exactly do you have done to your car? I'm interested. Also, what are you quarter mile times and MPH? I originally bought my '92SE 5spd as my beater, but since I've been introduced to this sight, I have been ever so tempted to modify it.Originally posted by Bryan H
