Does anyone have their max painted...

Gunmetal and have a picture of it? I'm thinking of painting my 91 Max Gunmetal as I can get paint jobs for 150 bucks (I have to do all the prep/masking but my friend is a professional car painter and only charges for paint and a case of beer to be used AFTER painting:P)

I dont think that would look to good unless you had the whole exterior done up with some nice rims and a kit, gun metal really only looks good when done right

thats some cheap paint at $150. I know for good paint (ppg) on my car its going to be $400. Heck my other choice of paint Sherwin Williams is $275 with my brother in laws discount (he works for them) regular price is also around $400.

I guess it could be single stage paint since that is cheaper or the martin senor crossfire b/c paint.

I guess gun metal would look ok. I mean it would just look like a really dark grey car...I dont think I have seen any that color.

What color is your car now?

It's not cheap paint either it's all ppg. He just has his own shop and I do piece work for his other landscaping company so I eat some hours for him and he eats the cost of the paint.

Finding the right hue and hex code for gunmetal would be nearly impossible.

Yea, color matching off pictures and stuff in photoshop. But things like glare and reflections always effect the hue making it not right

you should do a base coat/clear coat. Single stage usually looks cheap, especially with non-original color.

If the paint is PPG, make sure to use something other than omni. That's their worst line of paint. Plus, anything above that has a lifetime warranty from PPG. My brother used to work in the automotive finishes department at PPG and he told me to stay away from Omni.

Just my 2 cents.

Thing is, have you ever done prep work? The work you do before you paint makes or breaks the paint job. If you haven't done it before, use the extra money that you'll save from getting hooked up and have someone do it for you

Klown, my buddy will be there by my side making sure I don't mess it up. once I get the hang of it I'll be able to finish it off. He's a good buddy of mine so I trust him.

I was thinking 3-4 coats of primer then 3-4 coats of paint then a clear coat to make it shiney.

cool that its not cheap paint...go for it for that price. Have you looked at the Porsche Seal grey paint. It is awesome...has like 4 or 5 different pearls in it...just something to think about.

You will need more than one coat of clear. You will need at least 3 if you want to wet sand it and buff to a glass like finish.

you will not need that many coats of paint either...
here is what I would do. prime, block sand, prime again, block sand (you get the idea lol), spray a sealer that is tinted the color you are painting then you will only need 2 coats of color.

of course since he will actually do the painting he will know whats best as far as that goes.

Good luck and keep us updated...I always enjoy seeing new colors on the 3rd gen.

Do you have a picture or a hex color for the seal grey? I'm having trouble finding a picture of the Gunmetal I want. Either that or I'm thining that deep Mercedez Benz Dark Charcoal they used to paint those 190 E's.
