Hopefully its not the pass. side axle... A major pain in the rear to replace!!! My prob. is that the ring that gets bolted to the engine block is pressed on and impossible to get off. I was going to replace my axle myself, but I couldn't get the thing off. I ended up taking it to the dealer, and they promptly put it on their press and BROKE the ring... What I thought was only going to take them an hour now took them 2 days, because they had to order a new one. So after *itching about being w/o my car to them they hooked me up with a rental for free, but I may end up having to do it again. I recently put another engine in my max, and I must have stressed the axle too much in one direction because now I got a wierd tick (not like the regular CV going bad tick) when I am decelerating turning right or coasting in a straight line.... hmmm.... it usually makes noise accelerating and turning at the same time if the CV is bad.... and my boots aren't ripped either!!

axle problem

I don't know what engine is in the 90 SE, but if it is the same as the 93 SE, then you have an over-sized axle that is designed to handle higher power. These axles ARE hard to find and VERY expensive. $570 sounds about right for one side. I almost had to have mine replaced, but I could have it rebuilt for around $70. If you can get it rebuilt, I recommend it! As long as there is not much damage to the CV joint, or the seals, then you should be OK.

$570 is too much!!!

After attempting to do it myself with an axle I bought from Schuck's for $70, I let Nissan do it. Needless to say, their axle was more expensive, but only like $130. They installed it and everything for $210. I don't think that it should cost that much. The right side may be more expensive because it includes a bearing for the torque steer reducing equal length drive shaft. I know in Seattle they have a great place that rebuilds the axles for cheap, but they were charging more to rebuild my shaft than Nissan to put in one with the Nissan warrantee.
