Has this happened to you?.......

I was going to make an attempt to recharge my AC and for some reason everytime I turn the blower on it's fine, but when I push the AC button, the engine shuts off!!! It happens over and over.

If I press on the gas pedal to increase the rev's, when I hit the AC button, there is a screeching noise and then I see and smell smoke.

I don't know what it could be, but as long as I don't press the AC button tha car runs fine. I was hoping for some feedback as I don't want to buy a bunch of parts and they are not the right ones.

Needless to say I can't recharge my AC. It's a 93 SE 5SP

I think it might be the compressor, I only hope it's simple. I tried the search to see if anyone has experienced it, but no go.

Thanks a million,
Have a great summer
Ron

It's screeching because for some reason the compressor is not turning. It doesn't screech when it's not on because the clutch is not engaged. It could be a bad clutch on the compressor. But if you been running this unit w/o or low on freon, you could have ruined it. And if you have ruined it, you could have contaminated the rest of your AC components, ie.. dryer/condensor and anything else that runs inline with the freon.

The freon not only makes the air cool, it lubricates the compressor bearings.

the clutch is slipping a bit and it makes nasty noises when it engages... mine does that too. signs that it's about time for a new one. $$$

Thanks for the help

I kind of figured it was time to replace the compressor. It has been awhile since I ran the AC. It hasn't been on in at least 2 summers and know I am paying the price now.

It it necessary to replace all the parts or just the replace the compresor? I figured that putting freon in it won't do a thing at this point and the cheapest I could find a compressor for is $270.00

Thanks again as always for the help.

The first one looks good, but the guy won't warranty it.

The second looks like it fell off of a truck onto the freeway, but he'll warranty it for 30 days.

cheaper than $270...

That's why it's a good idea to run your AC in the winter time for a couple minutes once or twice a month to keep all components lubricated. Not totally needed but it's a good preventive maintenance.

Neither of those will work for his car. they're both R12 compressors (note the 89-92 designation on the listing). his '93 has R134a in it. the compressors will "work", but they're not the ones designed for the car.

didn't think of that. My bad. Damn environmentalists...j/k

Then just start saving money. Summer's almost over and you have until about next May to come up with the cash

I have to do the same thing. Mine's starting to sound "like a BOV" when I get it over about 5k RPM.
