Am I getting ripped off?

Hi everyone, I just contacted my local nissan guy, and asked him for an estimate on just labor for a replacing my old struts and boots with some new parts I bought from Shox.com.

He quoted me:

120 labor for the front pair
180 labor for the rear pair

So, is this guy ripping me off? Would I be safe going to a major franchise and having them install my mods (if they would do this at all)?

Thanks for ytour advice guys.

yeah, that's a ripoff. you can change the front struts in about 30 minutes. Rears take about an hour..

If you're in the Houston area, I'll do the whole thing for $120.

He's not "ripping" you off, but he is going by the book (more than likely the Mitchell guide). At $60/hr, it comes out to 1 hr ea front and 1.5 hrs per rear. That's about right.

Just ask him to show you the book for repairs like this. They will go by the book estimates even if it takes them longer due to unforeseen problems. They more than likely will not charge you less though if the mechanic does finish sooner. Take the book estimate of hrs and then the hourly rate and see what you get.

Check around for a local mechanic. This would not be a difficult job for them.

exactly.. they charge 1 hr for a 15 min job for one strut.. then they charge another hour for the other strut... which also takes 15 minutes.

If they'd actually charge you by the time it takes to swap the struts, you'd pay a LOT less.

I wish I was in the Houston area, I would def take you up on the offer. Brookyln to Houston is a bit of a drive.

I know alot of the .org members are from BR, so I'll ask around for a suggestion.

Thanks for the help - it did seem pretty steep for replacing struts. Shady mechanics...

No offense Matt, but thats in a perfect world with no rust. If the rear bolts aren't frozen, its like 40 min per. If they are frozen.... It can take a while.
