Fair price for a rack and pinion install? Shop wants $650

How much is the part itself and how much would the labor be? I know $650 is overpriced. I want to know what the lower end would be.

Hey I installed one on my car, its a fairly easy install as long as you have some larger tools. The cost for me was 149.95 for the part and a 125 dollar core with my discount at lappens but you get the core back when you bring in your old one. Mine was for the SE model with the electric power assist steering. I have no clue what the differences of the rack and pinion are with or without the elictric assist steering. Honestly if you do the work yourself on your car you'll be able to do this for alot cheaper.

yeh your best bet is to buy one from a lappens or autozone or pepboys, whatever is close to you. Shop around for a price. I think there is a unit on ebay for sale also. Im not sure, but I thought I saw one on there.

Thanks guys.

Mike, I have neither the space nor the tools nor the sufficient mechanical knowledge to perform this undertaking. I only do basic stuff on my car, anything that requires lifting up the car or a moderately complex repair, I leave it to the shop.

i know this is off topic, but i used to think like that too....until i installed my own suspension setup myself....step by step instructions from here helped out a lot and you buy tools as you go along, but you'll use the tools more than once!!! a lot of peeps say they're not mechanically inclined, but with instructions and not afraid of gettin dirty, its not really hard at all.....just have to try!!!

Update: rack and pinion changed by an independent shop for $350 (including tax) as suggested in one of the posts here. I actually negotiated a bit. After alignment was performed, car has run normally and shaking at high speeds is gone.

good job, I had mine done @ the local backyard mechanic to stop my shaking and it did nothing, 350$ too, waisted, but New Rack and Pinion System, the problem was the damn bushings which he was too lazy not to change, not a problem tho, got my Rack and Pinion Bushings and all 4 Control arm bushings from Courtsey Nissan (in the mail as i type) for 80$ which i think i scored because a new control arm = 185$ @ my local dealer.

as stated in on of the stickies you just use the 2nd generation control arm bushings. that's probably what they sold you.

I watched when this guy exhanged the unit. It was clearly dead. Looked like a busted cv axle, even worse. Car felt like new after it was done and aligned. And don't even bother with stealerships.
