Subwoofers and electronics

hello. i just received my subs, amp, and wiring kit. but, i've been looking at the firewall to see if there's a hole there, or where i can line the wiring through the car...

i'm new at this, and i don't know if i need to drill a hole or what not.

if you've done this, where did you line the 'power' wiring for the amp?

====================

also, i have another question. i have a JENSEN headunit, i dont know what model, but how do I hook the RCA wire to it?... my friend told me that since my power antenna doesnt work, its probably because its not hooked up. So when i install my RCA wire, i am going to find out why my power antenna doesn't go down...

if anybody could help me out with taking out the headunit, that would be nice.

thanks.

i believe there is a grommet that you can run the wire through but i ran it through the body for mine and insulated it just in case. search through the forums and you should find some info on that. concerning removing your headunit, anyone with a philips screwdriver can get it out. 3 screws i believe....2 beside the hazard light button, and 1 under the cig lighter button. you will most likely need a harness to adapt to the new h/u.

If I were to drill one, then wouldnt I need to find one of those rubber washers, so that water, or cold air wouldnt leek into my car?

If you don't have a washer, use a good amount of RTV. Once it cures, it will keep out all air and contaminates.

Yea, like posted above the easiest way to run the wires is through the grommet. All you have to do is take the plastic off the wheelwell on the drivers side. And you will see the grommet. Alot easier and cleaner than drilling a hole.

right below the windshield wiper motor there's a rubber boot that you can pull out to run the power wire for your amp. this will save you from drilling.

I agree w/Gjohnson...

If U want to see where this infamous grommet is, check my webpage - I took pics when I installed my stuff. Good luck & let me know if U have any more questions on your install.

This is kinda off subject, but figured it would be better than starting a new thread. I recently bought a system for my car and received most of the stuff yesterday. I have a 1200 Watt amp, what guage wiring kit should I use? 2? 4? 8? Ive been lookin around and 4 guage seems to be used quite often, just wanted to see what you all think.

for that high wattage amp, go with 4 gauge or bigger unless you want to start a nice little fire.

What size fuse is on the amp?
for a 1200W amp, you should probably be running 2awg minimum. I'm running 1/0 to my amps in the back and still have voltage drop issues with "only" a 1200W, a 400W, and 100W amp running.
also, don't bother with buying that $10/foot audio cable from a stereo shop. go to an industrial wire supply place and pick up some welding cable. I paid $1.25/foot for my 1/0, compared to $12/foot for 2awg "stereo cable". bah.

Oh, yeah. Matt, where is that industrial wire supply place that you picked up the wire from here in Tulsa?

It's a hard one. "Industrial Cable and Supply"
don't have their number, but it's around the Hilti plant, back in the small commercial area behind it or something. least that's where they used to be.

when I was there, the only colors they had were yellow and black, but smaller sizes had some other colors too.

Again another pretty lame question, but.... The amp kit I bought for the amp is 2 guage, thick stuff. Now I have installed smaller amps in my friends cars, and only used like 10 guage wire. My question is where/what am I running this 2 guage wire under that won't be noticeable? Will it fit under the carpet right along the drivers side of the car?
