starter help

starter was working like 50% of the time when I turned the key.
So I replaced with one from autozone (duralast lifetime warranty $119.99)
and when i went to start nothing , only click but didn't turn the engine.
so i connected a jumper from the relay lead on the solenoid to the pos. on the battery and it was turning the engine so I took of jumper put the connection back to the relay lead and when I turned the key it worked. But it only worked for about 5-6 more start then the 7 time I started it the starter motor stayed on, so disconnected the neg. from battery. Then I disconnected everthing,( pos. to stater and lead to relay) and reconnected it and nothing again just like at first install, click, so I redid the procedures like at first with jumper, then it worked for the 3 starts but the 4 nothing again, click.

Any help will be apreciated.
Should I replace neg. ,pos. wires, clean ground? or what?
im thinking of returning the starter maybe a faulty stater?
what do you fellas think?

sounds like the starter solenoid is bad. take the starter back to autozone and get a different one. have them test it on their bench before you take the new one home.

the battery is good.
I took back the starter to autozone. But I did not tested. I now believe that the ignition relay/fuse link is faulty.

Because when I started it once with the old starter, after shutting off the key. the starter motor stayed on, with no key in the ignition. (So that means something was completing the circuit. ie relay)

tommorow i going to buy the relay lets see what happens.

Thanks for input.

well since you replaced the starter it most likely not the solenoid. Next thing to check is the relay for the starter. like you said somethings completing the circut without the kay. if its not the solenoid then you may have a short in the ignition somewhere. I hate that..

In the manual it said that if the motors spins and does not crank the motor that you have to replace the starter. so I went back to Autozone and repalce it and bam it works.

I believe my relay and my starter/solenoid where faulty.

Ps i read about in this forum somewhere a negative story about autozone and starters. Its TRUE those guys are really stupid I tried explaining what the manual said about the internal defect, but no they said well it works on our bench, I said I just told you that, in my car when I turn the ignition I had heard the startermotor spinnig but my engine was not cranking.( my car /neg /pos /and /lead to solenoid=bench /neg /pos /and /lead to solenoid) Duh! but it works here, idiots. ANyways dont go to autozone for starters.

Thanks fellas for your replies!
