VE's dont have lifters
Hey guys, I'm just bored, kind of tired of messing with my car, but might just go swap out the Idle Air Control Valve.
Anyway, I was just reading some threads and found people calling their lifters in the VE noisy. VE's dont have lifters, they have Roller Rockers with the fulcrum sitting on the very end of the rocker, then the cam pushing on the middle roller, which inturn makes the far roller push the valve open.
Cam -> Roller Rocker. No lifter
going off that, what would be really cool is if Nissan came up with a way to have the fulcrum points (basically like the support point of a teeter-totter) lower and raise threwout the RPM range. The height of the little "fulcrums" (we'll just call them that right now, until i can find it in the FSM) would then be able to directly control the duration and timing of the cam, basically the only reason why you would ever need to upgrade cams would be because the stock ones broke.
Now I'm going back out side to tinker with the heads.

i think when they say the lifters are ticking they really mean hydraulic lash ajusters its on the other end of the rocker arm and when these get air in them they tick mine started to tick after my engine went low on oil and my vtcs were grounded this a a quote from the FSM
When rocker arm can be moved at least 1 mm by pushing at hydralic lash adjuster location, it indicates that there is air in the high pressure chamber. Noise wil be emitted from the hydraulic lash adjuster if engine is started without bleeding air.

yeah, gotcha. I went out and looked the spare engine. I'm still standing by my whole adjustable variable valvetrain idea though, I think its cool, too bad we just cant add one ($$$$)
to bleed
remove hydro lash ajuster and dip in a container filled with oil. while pushing the plunger as shown in figure lightly push check ball using thin rod. air is conpletly bled when plunger no lionger moves
the fsm has a picture of this that will help if oyu have one this is off of page EM-82

Man I have seen you post a bunch about your lifters ticking. Have you tried grounding the VTCs because it sure sounds like thats the problem...cant imagine it being the hydrolic lash adjusters. I guess it could be but usually if it is ticking that bad its the VTCs.

In order to get to the lifters, you will have to take the cams out. I would sure hope it is not the lifters. Maybe its the Injectors? I've heard people say they make little clicking noises when they work, I'm just used to hearing the little ticks that sound like the valvetrain or something, its been that way on all the VE's I've heard (maybe 5?).
You probably have already, but just make sure, compare it to the other VE guy's over there (Jason, Diego, etc)

Don't hydraulic lash adjusters adjust them selves ie. bleed fill empty with pressure feed to them by the engine it self once there installed I wouldn't think that u had to touch them again unless they were stuffed and VTC's can go bad even after being grounded. I beleive that grounding them is only a temp sort of arangement, just gives u a bid me time before u need to replace them.

Hey Donald, thanks for asking.
I haven't been driving it much because on the first time I took it out (went to Napa) when I was taking a turn the engine shut off on me and I lost power steering, and the power brakes. I've done some cleaning/tuneup stuff since then and its gotten alot better, I took the car out yesterday and was forcing it to go at 500rpm to try and provoke a reaction. I think Jeff was right when he said its probably the IAA (Idle Air Adjusting) Unit.
Aside from that, on the way down to Napa I opened it up abit and chirped second (I was bad, not even 10 miles on the clutch, but lots of run time). The engine seems to rev much more freely compared to my old car, and the clutch is going to take some getting used to. It grabs pretty quickly, so I've stalled it a few times just trying to find out where the limit is.
Aside from the few little things I need to work out of the engine, I'm enjoying it. It's nice to have a Maxima again, and after yesterday, I feel much more comfortable driving it outside of my neighborhood.

extactly i dont want to do an engine flush cuz i have been reading here on the org that it causes more damage than good. IT takes all that slug and build up out the engine, but that is what also is whats holding the maxima together. I heard horror stories about it. Heck my vg was never flushed and it had 181K on it until i gave it to this girl i know. SHe then went to a mechanic and he told her to flush it, 120 dollars later she said there was so much shiet coming out the engine and the guy showed her how crudded the internals was via waste of the flush. I havent driven the max since then, i think its ok, but this is a vg we are talking about they take the abuse well unlike any other engine i driven. Thank goodness to the cast iron block.
But taking the cams out to just bleed the hydrolics isnt an option since that is gonna cost me $$$$, dont have the pleasure of a garage to work in.

Really? I always thought it had Cast Iron because of when people would say the VG should be able to handle more boost than a VE because the VG has Iron heads and the VE has Aluminum.

Shawn boy, Nissan has featured aluminum heads on their engines since the mid/late 60's. The only modern-ish car that has iron block/heads was my Merkur XR4TI. Probaby alot of the domestic V8s feature iron heads up to the not so distant past though.

Donald- I'm slowly learning about boats and such, yours has a V-Drive right? (I think you said it had a 390ci in it? Would you happen to have some more pics I can look at?

390ci bored to a 447ci with cam, pistons, crank, rods, edelbrock intake, some port work, open headers (dry), Holley 750cfm, and some other goodies like Accell ignition and pertronix converted electronic ignition.
