bye bye max
bye bye max
Well today i bought a 93' SHO and this weekend i am going to be sellin my 94' Maxima SE. i never really realized how much i love that damn car. It was my first car and first out of all my friends and that was the car everybody packed into and mobbed around town. I don't think i am going to regret considering the SHO is way faster and its Manual instead of Automatic like the Maxima. Also I just Replaced the Tranny at around
103,000k and its already slippin up at 111,000k so i am glad i am gettin rid of it but i will always love that car.
Matt

You just replaced the trans in your MAX eh? Well you'de better plan on replacing the trans in the SHO too. Talk to any transmission shop, the trans in the SHO is it's WEAKEST LINK, they always go out around 100k. Good luck with your FORD.
id take a SHO 5spd over an auto max anyday but its your own fault for not just doing a 5spd convertion theres a much better aftermarket for the max than for the SHO and i bet a VE 5pds is more reliable to but good luck. i have to admite i was considering a 5spd SHO while i was looking for a 5spd max, simalar power and style but i couldnt find one and thats scary since everyone knows how rare a ve 5spd is
When considering cars, there a lot of things one may take into consideration. Power, style, personality, maintenance costs, operational costs, etc.
Using all of the above, and a few more, and applying them to the aforementioned two cars, it's obvious my maxima wins hands down.
A ford over a maxima? What are you crazy....I don't care if it's a SHO, or a HO.
Going from a Maxima to a Ford SHO, is like moving from ya well equipment bedroom to ya mom's garage. Oh well, I guess that's where you have the SHO anyway?

Well, this guy got a nice welcome! haha. Don't know why he chose to make is first post one of his last but whatever.
Anyhoo. Watch the brakes on the sho. They were undersized. The sho has a great engine but didn't really have a great body/chassis to support it. The 5-sp VE maximas went head to head in comparision tests and they were basicly even in the performance dept. That just left reliability to decide on which was better.
Visit ShoTimes.com or whatever it's called now.

If The max se could only keep with sho that's pretty sad. I raced an sho when I had my 83 Imp with a 4bbl 305. I kept up with it no problem until we got to close to parked cars (had to back off) so they can't be that fast. The max feels faster than my imp did but that was 3-4 years ago anyhow. sheesh I miss that car
ve 5-sp and the sho 5-sps were rated very close in performance. ie.. ave 0-60 times of about 7.0 seconds. That Yamaha based V6 put out over 200hp and put out 220hp in the later years.

I would like to know that too Jeff. When I bought my Max the only other car I consider was the SHO, but my dad quickly talked me out of that. Weird thing is he hates foreign cars too.
I would have to second that also Jeffy, I would take just about any year Cobra or lightning. Heck I would take just about most GT's also.

i wouldn't take a ford if it was given to me. well... maybe i would just so i could prove to my family that they really do suck. good luck with the SHO and I hope it gives you better times than any ford i've dealt with.

The line up that they had from 89-94 not quite
You are so full of poop MT. If someone gave me a SVT Lightning/Cobra/ I'd run and never come back.

well... you'd have to come back so you could take it shop constantly. also... be very careful not to wreck a ford, they have terrible safety on a majority of their vehicles. it's like they don't even care about the people driving it.
You mean they run as well as your car does right now?? Ford's safety on their cars now would tear our old **** maximas up by a BIG margin. Even the 4 gen maximas weren't that safe. You can't be so ignorant to ignore over 13 years of automotive safety evolution. How naive are you? Even a Hyundai is safer.
Does you car even have ONE airbag?

"Thanks to the WTFB Forums at www.wtfbracing.com for the following, which I believe was originally from blue oval news:
"1994-2003+ Ford Mustangs fail mandated fuel system integrity and door open-ability tests. Ford photo.
Ford Motor Company internal documents show that the 1999-current Ford Mustang may be one of most dangerous models produced in recent memory. According to court documents, Ford testified that it does not have a single 50 MPH CTC (car to car) fuel integrity crash test in which the 1999-current Ford Mustang can pass. Nonetheless, Ford Motor Company offers the Mustang without warning to consumers. There are estimated to be at least seven current Mustang death fire cases in court against Ford. Inevitably, Ford will settle these cases and continue conducting business as usual. Ford has testified that it has NEVER allowed a Mustang case to go to trial.
What makes the Mustang even more dangerous is the fact that the Mustang cannot pass a standard and Ford mandated door open-ability test. To consumers, this means that after a 35 MPH rear impact, both doors become un-openable creating a virtual death trap for passengers. Within the past few years, it has been recorded that people have survived a crash in a Ford Mustang; however, either burnt to death or died due to burn related injuries after being unable to escape due to jammed doors.
According to confidential, internal Ford Motor Company documents, Ford tested eight ( Mustangs for the 1999+ model years in the 50 mile per hour rear car to car (CTC) crash test. The first six Mustangs tested grossly failed the test losing more than one gallon of stoddard fuel upon impact converting the Mustang into a virtual bomb - making escape unlikely even if the doors were openable. The * maximum * allowable spillage is 1 ounce upon impact and 1 ounce per minute after cessation of vehicle motion.
The seventh test was also a failure with a Mustang coupe losing over 5 ounces of stoddard fuel upon impact. Ford didn't accurately record the exact amount spilled.
The eighth and final test Ford conducted on the Mustang failed the static rollover test making the model 0-8 for fuel system crash worthiness.
It's also important to note that the 1994-1998 Mustang program also failed to produce a Mustang that could pass a 50 MPH inline crash test; however, those tests did not fail as horrifically as the 1999-current Mustangs tests did.
Are these results acceptable? Is this what Bill Ford considers safe?"
Yeah... I call that really safe
.Air bags, yeah right. I will absolutely never use an airbag. I don't feel like being hit in the face by something popping out at 200+ mph. If the seat belt isn't enough then something is wrong.

Fords 89 line up:
Aerostar No
Bronco No
Bronco II No (couldn't keep it upright anyways)
Crown Vic maybe with police package
Econoline van No
Escort No
Festiva No
Mustang with 5.0 and mods yes
Pickup Depended on options
Probe with turbo possibly
Ranger No
Taurus only SHO
Tempo No
Tbird SC maybe
That would less than half
those econoline vans suck. apprently ford never head of disc brakes. that thing was a pain in the butt to stop and so underpowered it would make you cry yet had the gas mileage to make you think you had a 300+ hp monster v8 in there.
Oh did I say back then? Thanks.

Hmm let's see. You listed 15. Here's what is faster than a 89' maxima. Let's say auto.
Crown vic I will say yes.
Mustang with the 200hp+ 5.0 yes
Pickup? Anyone of the V8s probably is. F150 or F100.
Probe turbo. very likely
Tauras? sho definately
SC T-bird? very likely
That's 7. Pretty close.

Oh I'm sorry! Were you ragging on the OLD Fords, NEW Fords or ALL Fords??

Some of you may bash Fords, but in my limited experience, the 92-95 era of the Taurus/Sable are some of the most bulletproof autos you can get (unless you got the 3.8L).
Heres a quick roundup of what i remember this kid Jason i know did to his parent's 92 Sable GS back in the day.
1. While attempting to use the column shifter to hold gears while racing a Civic, he overshot D (which is 3 in most cars), OD, N and ended up in reverse at 50mph. We came to a sudden halt in the middle of Route 6. Car started right up afterwards and to my knowledge, was still running on its original tranny the day he got rid of it. I still cannot fathom how this transmission didnt die.
2. His parents often ran the car 15K or MORE between oil changes.
3. Often the only times they would check the oil is when the idiot light came on.
4. His mother several times ran the tank bone dry on gas and had to walk to gas stations to get gas. I mean, how dumb can you be---the Sable had a low-gas warning light like our 3rd gens even if you never glanced at the gauge. As far as i know, the fuel pump never overheated and the impurities at the bottom of the tank never caused major engine problems. Hell, to the best of my knowledge the fuel filter was never replaced to the day he got rid of the car.
5. Jason once ran over a huge rock in the middle of his street that he claimed "looked like a paper bag". Ripped open the transmission fluid casing and damaged an engine mount. The former was fixed the next day after he lost a lot of fluid, the latter was not fixed till like 30K later.
6. As far as i know, there was only one tuneup done on the car, and he didnt have platinum plugs.
And this wreck lasted 178,000 miles and was STILL RUNNING when he got rid of it. The only reason he did ditch the sable was he didnt have enough money to fix the exhaust system and the struts which were bottoming out the car all the time, which caused the exhuast system damage. Oh---and in the months preceding the demise of the car, he was running it with a tranny leak, and only put in more fluid when it really started to slip.
I should note the 3.8L motors in the LS Sables and LX Tauruses were prone to frequent head gasket failures and thus were not as reliable. Jason got another Sable (this one green and used) which had the 3.8L and within a year of buying it, had a blown head gasket. The car didnt even make it to 100K.

as for half of the new fords being faster than our cars lets see if you're right
2004 vehicles:
Crown Vic sport sedan - no
Econoline Cargo with 5.4 V8 - no
Econoline wagon with same engine - no
Escape - no
Escort - no
Excursion with V10 - no
Expedition sport with 5.4 V8 - no
Explorer sport with V8 - no
Explorer Sport Trac - no
F-150 with regular cab and V8 - against VE no against VG maybe
F-150 Heritage - no
F-150 Lightning - yes
F-250 regular cab - no
F-350 regular cab - no
Focus 2 dr hatch with 2.3 - against VE no against VG possibly
Focus SVT 2 dr - VE no VG yes

Mustang v6 - VE maybe VG yes
Mustang Cobra - yes
Ranger supercab with 4.0 v6 - yes
Ranger regular cab with 3.0 v6 - no
Taurus sedan with duratec - no
Thunderbird - yes
so against the VE there are 5 maybe 6 that can beat it out of 24 and for the VG 7 and maybe 8 or 9 out of 24. i hardly call that half.

You know what? Let's lock this down so I can spare my IQ today.
