Speedometer just stoped workin? HELP!

i started the car this mornin and all of a sudden when i started to drive i noticed my speedometer was hesitating to go up, and then it jus completelystoped after about 2 miles.
my RPM guage goes up and down with no prob, but my speedometer and my odometer stoped.
i gota 91 gxe.
anyone who if its a sensor or a fuse. ( dont think there are fuses for that but)
Pictures or diaograms would help to -if anyone knows where the probelem is?

a friend told me to check the trotlle cables and they look fine to me.
any help would help me, i dont wana take it to the nissan dealer jus yet.

check on the back side of your tranny. there should be a sensor goin into your tranny. (Vehicle Speed Sensor as Mike said) It could have possibly came out or just went out on you. This sounds right to me but I'm not what you would call an expert :-)

speed sensor like everyone elses said, but I'll tell you what it's gonna look like...the gear on the end of the sensor is going to be totally smooth...and it costs 170 for a new sensor

My max had a speedometer problem once.

I stopped driving it for a couple of days, then i had a dream that I was driving and i looked at the speedometer and it was working again.

When i woke up i drove it again and wua-la it worked!

no dought about it the VSS would cause you speedometer to fail like that. try geting one from a junkyard it may be cheaper that way.

I'm having the same problem (speedometer works sometimes), but my odometer always works. Would this still be the vehicle speed sensor, or the speedometer itself?

Link shows speed sensor: http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton...61CH04_26.HTML

It is located below your oil filter, held in with one bolt to top of transmission (auto). I have several times repaired by tapping the black plastic top which sometimes works it way up about 3/16" from the metal body of the sensor. The speed sensor when spun by hand or a drill should generate an AC voltage as shown on the link, if not it is bad. I removed the gear and inserted shaft in drill to test. Good Luck

My Speedo

My speedo doesn't work in the mornings when it is damp out. When I get up to highway speed it flings up like it was stuck and just needed enough pull on it to go. Also if I bang on the top of the dash it sometimes frees it up.
Anyone experience this?
Also my clock is dim sometimes and I bang on the dash and it lights up perfect.
I assume I have some loose connections ehind my dash. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Matthew

My clock dose the same damn thing. I think it might somewhat of a common problem among 3rd gen owners. Dont know what the cause of the problem is though.

Dry or partial soldering joints are the common cause of this in the clock and the speedometer.
