Cleaning ABS sensors

I am in the process of installing eibachs / tokicos in the rear of my 92SE. I took the ABS sensors off of the strut assembly, and they are very rusty and dirty (I had to pry one of them off with a screwdriver and a rubber mallet). Should I clean them with a wire brush, or will that ruin the actual sensor (which appears to be nothing more than an rhombus-shaped piece of metal)? If scouring is too harsh, is there a solvent (petroleum based or otherwise) that will clean them? Thanks for any advice.
