and the machine work on the head? $$
AZ should have one. If you can afford it get the screw in type they're more accurate and easier to use.
by the time you pay a shop for a head rebuild, new valves, new rockers, plus all the gaskets to put it back together, you're going to be well over $1000.
the top end rebuild kit is a couple hundred bucks, but includes all the gaskets you'll need, plus the valve guide seals and everything else.
so at this point, you need to either buy a used engine and install it, or take the one you've got to a shop and bend over. they'll probably tell you to replace it anyway if all the valves are bent.
Assuming you don't listen to us at this point and you get the head fixed, do you still think you can line up the timing chain when you try to put it all back together?
I highly suggest paying a trained mechanic to do all of it.

I highly suggest just getting another used engine. Take the exhaust manifolds off and replace all the studs. Also consider doing the front/rear main seals and maybe even a new KS while you have the engine out. One thing I suggest is when you inspect the replacement motor, take the oil cap off and see if the valvetrain is varnished up or is a clean aluminum color. If it's all varnished(ie.. cam tower caps are dark vs aluminum color) be wary. If the valvetrain looks nice and clean, there's a better chance that the engine was taken care of vs neglected with no oil changes etc.
if you do get the head redone and get everything back together make sure you turn the motor over buy hand before you do it with the starter to make sure you have it all lined up right. and remember i did get a jdm ve shipped to my town for 1200 bucks so if you find out its going to be alot to do the head you mine as well just get a lower milage motor and forget about all this. i feel really bad for you because i could se my self doing the same exact thing and kicking my self every day for digging a big hole and having to trying to climb out of it. good luck

sorry some of the pics look yellowish, I was trying to save the batteries by not using the flash.
Again, you might want to look around for an extra engine, at this point if your local yard has one cheap, just buy it. Well actually follow Jeff's advice first, and make sure it works, then buy it. Dont spend alot of money on it, just something to get your car back up on its feet.
Dont let the whole VTC thing get you down either, if you believe you can swap the engines yourself go for it! Remember at this point, it's a matter of getting the car running again, and making sure it doesnt cost an arm and a leg to do so.
After that then you can tinker with the spare motor, find out whats wrong, maybe find some replacement parts from another member whos parting out or has a blown engine or something instead of paying nearly $30 each for 6 rockers.
It could turn out that your heads are fine and the pistons arent dented or anything, but it could be much worse. Either way by the time you find that out, your car should be running again, which is what matters the most.
just something to think about.

When you get another motor, do the maintainance stuff as per my pervious post. Then when you are ready, rent the cherry picker for a few days from an auto store or rental shop

if it is really $50 a day, just buy one. There normally $150-$200 and sometimes the local classifieds will have a good deal on them. Plus if you can get the fold up ones, they wont take up much space.
well its definitly the valves, ive got the timing set and she cranks but you can hear its not building compression , kinda makes a whooshing popping sound. cheapest thing for me to do is get a set of heads and pop them on. i really broke and need my car ASAP. I cant afford to have the car inoperable.
Ugh. sorry man. But when I read you broke all the rocker arms, I knew something was definately broken in there.
Well you might be able to convince Mr. Gone to sell you his heads since I think he's current engine is a good runner

well if anyone has a good set of heads ( may as well do both) preferably with cams and valves already in there , i have rebuilt vtcs so i dont care about those. let me know i need my car back on the road as quick as possible. i can do the ehad job in a day now i just have to order the gaskets - head, exhaust and reset the timing again ! oh my god im going insaine...
Well when I did the same work on my first motor, I only did one HG. And I only did one head because I screwed up the back head trying to drill out a broken stud! ack! But I had the engine out. I took off the head and had it helicoiled at a shop. then put a new HG on and all the hardware associated with it(alot as you probably know) and fired her up. The engine ran great for another 70,000 miles until a spun a bearing. Looking back, I think this motor was bad from the beginning as it was all varnished up inside. The head bolts were filled with old sludged up oil.
How is your clutch? If it's even kinda near clutch time, I'd consider just pulling the motor so you can work on it easier. Then put in a ACT or new oem clutch while your working on it.
Also if you pull both heads, take a good look in side the waterpump housing area. My blown motor had a bunch of oily sludge lodged in there. Couldn't be good.

Arg, I was going to try and keep a full motor, let me mull over it alittle. PM me with an offer if you'd like. The engine does have 165k on it, but the heads appear to be in good shape. I wasnt able to get a compression check on the engine before I tore it apart, but it was a solid runner before I got it. (story is my friend took my engine from my black maxima which had 101k on it and was working perfectly and swapped it out for this one because this one had a broken stud, and also he said it had bad VTC's (he grounded them for the few miles he drove the car around before he swapped motors. He said it pulled hard though)).
Right now you might as well pull your head and take a look. make sure the pistons arent damaged. Your looking at a new gasket anyway.
One more thing, and I'm hesitant to say it but.... you might be able to get away with using the current head gaskets if they come off clean (ie dont break or rip) and possiably coat them with some high temp silver spray paint and some of this gasket sealer stuff I have (its not like normal silicon based make-a-gasket stuff). Just a though, but I'm not sure how well it will work, but it is a cheap solution to buying new head gaskets. The trade off is that if it doesnt work, you'll have to tear apart the engine again and put new ones on, so you wont really be out money, just time.

But of course I'd probably just swap out the motor.
mustang trick....I didnt want to spend $80 on a new kit at the time, in the end Napa sold me a opened gasket set for $40, It was opened, but all the gaskets were brand new
Hmm don't know if it's possible to swap in a VQ motor but these 3 I found on ebay are really cheap so far and have no reserve unfortunately no VE's on there.
